Generative Fill and Generative Expand solve different production problems. The first alters a selected part of an existing picture; the second creates plausible content outside its frame. Treat both as image synthesis rather than restoration of what a camera actually recorded.
The editing boundary matters
In Firefly’s July 2026 web workflow, the editor marks a region with a brush and tells the model what belongs there. A mask is a request to focus change; it is not a pixel-exact guarantee. Leave a little breathing room around the object to be replaced, inspect edges at full size, and preserve the untouched source file. Photoshop’s August 2026 guide separately documents reference-image controls and the distinction between referencing a single object and an entire picture. It also lists partner models, which must not be confused with Adobe-owned models.
Expansion is composition, not recovered reality
Expand creates new visual material beyond the photographed field of view. Adobe documents freeform resizing and 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and 3:4 options in the June 2026 Firefly page. A successful banner extension requires horizon continuity, plausible shadows, consistent perspective and enough clean space for text; the expanded space should not be presented as genuine historical photographic evidence. Review repeated architectural geometry and skin detail where generated pixels touch real pixels.
Licensing requires model-level identification
Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on licensed content and eligible public-domain material and describes them as commercially safe. That is the company’s claim about its own models, not a universal legal clearance or a promise about partner-model outputs. The August 2026 Adobe Stock AI Studio guidance explicitly distinguishes Firefly from partner models and the requirements for underlying stock licenses. Keep the model identifier, input provenance and any license receipts with the exported asset.
Practical production sequence
Start with a lawful original photograph and a brief describing the desired deliverable. Use Fill for a localized revision, then Expand only if layout calls for a new crop. Export a contact sheet with an untouched original, an edited draft and the approved master. Ask a reviewer to check lettering, product shape and prohibited or confusing visual claims. If print typography must be exact, place text in a conventional layout editor rather than relying on generated lettering.
Worked scenario and failure test
Imagine a furniture company has a genuine photograph of a chair beside a window, but a regional banner requires a wide frame. Replace a distracting floor lamp with Fill, then extend only the empty wall to the right with Expand. Approve the frame only if the chair silhouette, stitching, shadow direction and label stay true to the original. Keep the source photograph in the asset package and explicitly mark the newly generated area. If the partner-model selector is used in the Adobe interface, attach the specific partner model and its terms rather than stamping the image with a generic Firefly commercial approval.
Decision guide and practical handoff
Use Fill for a targeted replacement; Expand for extra canvas; record whether Firefly or partner inference was used. A responsible review packet names the exact source or model version, the permitted input assets, the requested operation and the image characteristics a reviewer must check. It should also contain an unaltered reference, the accepted derivative, and a short record of what changed. A supported feature is not necessarily a reliable one for every brief, and the team must approve both technical appearance and real-world truthfulness before distribution.
Availability, price and geographic limitations
Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Release dates and historical tier details above are explicitly dated. Unless independently confirmed for a named country and account tier, current availability, billing currency, credit consumption, API quota and commercial entitlement are unknown—not universal. Consult official regional terms and AI 10’s dated price snapshots before procurement; do not treat a historical announcement as a live entitlement. No application, model, API response or image output was hands-on tested for this article.
