Act-Two is a practical answer to a different question from ordinary AI video generation: how can an actor’s recorded expression and motion drive a separate character? Runway documents a driving video and an image or video character reference, with a maximum supported output duration of 30 seconds. The input choice changes what the editor can control.
Inputs are not interchangeable
A driving performance is a video in which someone acts out the movement, dialogue and expression you want. A character input may be a still image or footage. Runway explains that a still character reference enables gesture control and automatically adds environment motion. With a character video, the original scene and camera motion remain, while the performance guides facial expression; the image-only gesture control is not available. This distinction determines whether you storyboard a static portrait scene or edit an existing plate.
Documented output envelope
The official help article identifies web availability on Standard or higher, up to 30 seconds, 24 frames per second and a credit unit of five Runway credits per second with a three-second billing minimum. It lists 16:9, 9:16, square and additional aspect-ratio presets. These specifications describe Act-Two, not all of Runway and not a universal video-API rate. They were checked against Runway’s help material on October 25, 2026; region and account entitlements can still change and must be checked before any purchase.
Production method
Record a clear performance in a quiet location and keep the face and upper body visible if gestures matter. Create a clean character reference that matches the intended shot; crop and composition deserve attention because an expressive face cannot compensate for an unsuitable plate. Run a short proof shot before using the full 30-second duration. Compare the result to your acting reference for mouth timing, eye line, hands, unwanted background movement and abrupt changes. If a shot fails, vary one input at a time so the reason remains traceable.
Calculate the right kind of cost
At the documented five credits per second, a ten-second generation uses 50 generation credits; the three-second minimum applies to very short requests. That is a credit quantity, not a currency quote: the effective cash cost depends on the separately purchased plan or credit package and cannot be inferred here. Include discarded attempts, final exports, optional editing and manual review time in the budget. Different models and third-party host integrations may have different credits, so do not transfer this calculation to them.
Permissions and alternatives
The driving recording includes somebody’s acting and potentially their voice, so confirm capture and reuse consent. A likeness based on another person also needs permission, even if the result appears stylized. Use a documented multi-character compositing workflow rather than assuming a single Act-Two generation supports multiple character performances. Where no human driving performance is available, a conventional image-to-video prompt can create motion, but does not offer the same recorded-acting control.
Worked editorial scenario
For a ten-second fictional shopkeeper monologue, prepare a rights-cleared actor performance and one illustration. Lock the dialogue before shooting to avoid regenerating many variants. Generate a short test, check whether the hands match the line and whether the environment moves appropriately, then complete the required shot. Enter the number of requested seconds and the documented credit rate into the production worksheet. Record a separate manual-approval decision for facial realism and likeness. The exercise tests a specific creative requirement; it does not establish that Act-Two is the objectively best tool for every talking character.
