Claude 2 launched on July 11, 2023 with an API and a public-facing beta chat website. Anthropic described longer responses and improvements to coding, math and reasoning. The model is now retired in Anthropic-operated APIs; its original availability claims are historical, not a usable deployment instruction for 2026.
Historical research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Primary-source historical claims are date-scoped; cloud entitlements, region-specific availability, current pricing and rate limits are not implied.

The release and why it mattered
The launch was significant because document-heavy users wanted models that could sustain coherent work over more text than short chat exchanges. Anthropic’s comparison with Claude 1.3 included exam-style scores, but the figures were supplier-run tests and should not be presented as neutral evidence of product superiority. The term “longer memory” in a launch blog does not mean cross-session personal memory.
Capabilities and genuine use cases
Practical early tasks included reading policies, drafting explanations and comparing passages. A business using the model for contract summaries still needed to verify parties, amounts, dates and exceptions from the original documents. Large context is useful only if the answer can reliably cite and distinguish the relevant source sections.
Integration and version identity
If migrating a legacy integration, capture the literal `claude-2.0` identifier and determine which Anthropic-hosted or cloud partner API actually served it. Model retirement dates can differ by operator. Anthropic’s official deprecation history records July 21, 2025 for `claude-2.0` on its platforms; that should be stored as a terminal lifecycle event, not a feature description.
Limits and evidence gaps
The 2023 blog does not establish enterprise residency, account access or licensing for applications built in 2026. It also does not imply later vision features or extended thinking. Tests of old outputs should avoid score inflation caused by newer documents or tools not included in the original task.
How to choose or migrate
Claude 2 is mainly valuable for understanding the transition toward long-document assistants. For new work, evaluate a currently supported model with a fixed corpus, a human source-checking protocol and current supplier terms; do not re-enable a retired ID.
Reproducible evaluation checklist
For older Claude services, compare the vendor-operated API lifecycle with the lifecycle published by the actual cloud partner. Exercise long inputs, structured outputs and tool argument validation as separate acceptance tests. Do not assume that matching family names imply identical backend checkpoints.
Collect the exact Messages API version, system instructions and model string from a reproducible request. An active cloud model and a retired direct-API model can coexist under similar product naming.
