Anthropic released Claude Haiku 4.5 on October 15, 2025, marketing it as a fast, lower-cost member of the family for coding and general-purpose tasks. The public announcement date must be distinguished from `claude-haiku-4-5-20251001`, the dated API name that embeds a different date. Neither date means the name is automatically portable across every cloud endpoint.
Historical research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Primary-source historical claims are date-scoped; cloud entitlements, region-specific availability, current pricing and rate limits are not implied.

The release and why it mattered
Haiku 4.5 followed advances in larger Sonnet models and was positioned for responsive assistants, customer support and pair programming. Anthropic claimed competitive performance and speed relative to older models, but these comparisons are supplier-produced and should not become independent ratings without a disclosed benchmark suite.
Capabilities and genuine use cases
Latency-sensitive teams should start with a small set of jobs: short text transformation, retrieval-grounded answer drafting and schema-constrained classification. They should separately assess complex reasoning, multilingual text and long-document hallucinations, rather than infer flagship performance from the marketing language. A reliable failover policy can be more important than a single throughput figure.
Integration and version identity
For production, record the snapshot, messages API version, sampling settings, prompt and output schema. Validate that model-specific tools are actually supported in the chosen platform before exposing any privileges. Vendor declarations of coding competence do not authorize local file writes, remote shell commands or code execution.
Limits and evidence gaps
At the editorial cutoff the historical release is well documented, but a first-party API lifecycle page is still required before asserting a universal replacement or shutdown date. Pricing and tier-specific permissions are kept outside this reference to avoid stale information.
How to choose or migrate
Haiku 4.5 helps explain how newer smaller models can replace older larger ones on bounded tasks. Buyers should test confidence, speed variability and cost on their own traffic; historical promotional claims are not a purchasing decision.
Reproducible evaluation checklist
For older Claude services, compare the vendor-operated API lifecycle with the lifecycle published by the actual cloud partner. Exercise long inputs, structured outputs and tool argument validation as separate acceptance tests. Do not assume that matching family names imply identical backend checkpoints.
Collect the exact Messages API version, system instructions and model string from a reproducible request. An active cloud model and a retired direct-API model can coexist under similar product naming.
