A studio may plan three months of exploratory video production based on an unlimited relaxed-generation allowance, then discover that its renewal uses credits instead.
A subscription can change the production budget without changing the model
Runway’s August 27, 2026 notice says its Unlimited plan is being phased out. Eligible legacy subscribers retain Unlimited terms through November 30, 2026; existing monthly subscribers automatically move to Max on that date. This is a future transition relative to the October 25 editorial cutoff, not a migration that has already happened. A screenshot of an old Unlimited offer should never be used as evidence of a plan available to new customers.
Unlimited and Max solve different production problems
The outgoing Unlimited offering combined a monthly credit bucket with Explore Mode, which could produce further images and videos at relaxed speed. The replacement Max offering is structured around 9,500 monthly credits and faster, on-demand runs rather than the same unlimited relaxed queue. Those numbers are vendor-reported allowances, not a universal number of videos. A single clip’s debit still depends on its model, seconds, options and any retry. In a workload dominated by short experiments, the loss of Explore Mode matters differently than it does for a fixed delivery schedule.
How to estimate a slate without false cost precision
Build a worksheet by shot, not by marketing plan. Record the model/version, proposed duration, known credit price per second or per generation, three quality-review attempts if your team budgets three, and all export or enhance stages. Multiply only source-confirmed usage quantities. Compare monthly expected credits with the dated plan allowance, marking overruns and failed generations as risks rather than free. If a price is verified by another team, join the snapshot using region, billing cycle, tax, currency and verified date. Do not present the historical monthly subscription quoted in the migration notice as a current retail offer.
Production choices before the switch
Check whether an account is genuinely a legacy Unlimited account, the subscription period, and any email Runway sent about the transition. Teams on annual Unlimited plans need to read the vendor’s distinct refund or credit-bonus paths rather than assuming the monthly plan rules apply. Export useful originals and preserve project metadata before switching workflows; changing a subscription is not a guarantee that existing drafts, shared seats or feature access will behave identically. Designate a human owner to approve new spend before late-November deliveries are committed.
Alternatives and limits
Max is not interchangeable with an API contract or with other hosts reselling Runway models. An organization needing predictable deployment could compare a separately documented provider API, a lower-credit model or local generation, but those options have their own queue and quality costs. Credits are a billing unit, not measured image quality or guaranteed service latency. Runway’s announcement does not establish hard turnaround times for every user, and this article makes no claim of hands-on speed testing.
Worked decision: recurring client reels
Suppose a small studio must deliver 12 ten-second reels next month with multiple iterations. First calculate the expected total generated seconds, not just 120 final seconds. Record which work could occur before November 30 and which will occur afterward; a November deadline and a December revision are different cost scenarios. Freeze the final edit schedule, preserve client approvals and request a current account-specific entitlement confirmation. The actionable decision is to budget for approved output and retries, while treating unused allowance and queue access as separate variables.
Editorial safeguards
The official Runway migration notice supplies transition dates and plan definitions; it cannot prove the subscriber’s personal billing state. This document was checked on October 25, 2026. Video quality, available features by country, rollover limits, taxes and charge amounts require current plan-specific verification before a purchasing recommendation. There is no independent benchmark or invented production example presented as observed work.
