“Made with AI” is sometimes useful transparency and sometimes an incomplete legal response. The right disclosure depends on the kind of content, the audience and the jurisdiction.
Three different purposes
An editorial disclosure tells people what production methods were used. A legal disclosure may satisfy an applicable content-labeling or AI-interaction obligation. A provenance record documents claimed asset history. These are related but not interchangeable, and none by itself guarantees that a synthetic depiction is authorized or truthful.
Make wording informative
For a fictional illustration, a concise generated-image label may be enough for editorial clarity. For a simulated interview, specify that the person did not record the words. For translated or dubbed speech, clarify which parts are synthetic and whether the original performer authorized the treatment. Do not imply a real endorsement or eyewitness record that never existed.
Different jurisdictions, different duties
As of 25 October 2026, the EU AI Act has transparency provisions subject to its phased application and transition rules. China’s synthetic-content labeling measures entered into effect in September 2025. South Korea’s 2026 AI Basic Act addresses AI-related notifications and generated output labels. Each regime has definitions, scope and exceptions that must be evaluated separately.
Treat file metadata and visible labels separately
Visible statements help audiences. Metadata and cryptographic credentials may aid provenance verification, but can be lost or misunderstood during reposting. Preserve source files and production records even when a social platform strips metadata. Never claim that an absent label proves a clip is authentic.
Example: financial explainer video
A channel uses synthetic historical scenes and an AI-generated narrator. Its editorial note distinguishes dramatization from archival footage and provides factual sources for the underlying claims. It verifies rights to voice assets and music. If distributing into regulated markets, it separately checks legally required labeling and metadata.
Verification task
Log content type, jurisdiction, distribution platform, applicable rule, effective date, disclosure location and reviewer. Obtain current official guidance before automated global publishing rather than copying one nation’s formula everywhere.
