Low-Resource Languages and AI Accessibility: What English Tests Miss

Models marketed as multilingual may provide weaker factual support, safety handling and accessibility for languages with fewer digital resources or regional varieties.

Look beyond advertised language lists

A model accepting text in a language does not mean it has adequate evaluation data, terminology support or dialect coverage. Tests should include local spelling conventions, named entities, code-switching, numerical formats and culturally appropriate expressions. Separate transcription, translation, comprehension and generation tasks.

Create a local-review process

Work with proficient native-language reviewers who understand the intended task and relevant community norms. Obtain consent and fair compensation for evaluation material. Avoid treating one metropolitan dialect as the definitive standard or inventing a single representative translation for ambiguous terms.

Measure safety and accessibility together

Test whether the system obeys safety boundaries in the local language, recognizes legitimate help requests and provides readable content. Accessibility may require screen-reader compatible scripts, text alternatives, nonvoice input and local typography. English benchmark scores do not prove equal outcomes elsewhere.

Report uncertainty

Show per-language sample sizes, tasks, error rates and known unsupported varieties. For unsupported or safety-critical interactions, route to a human specialist or offer the original source and a qualified translation service. Do not substitute an auto-translated warning label for localized legal or clinical advice.

Example

A municipal benefits assistant supports two regional languages. It tests translated benefit criteria with local counselors, documents mistranslated eligibility terms, and enables staff escalation. Success is measured by task completion and error correction—not just whether a response appears fluent.
