Stable Diffusion 3.5 is a model family released in 2024, not a universal preset for every local UI. Deployment choices depend on the exact weights, inference stack, hardware, and the applicable Stability license.
Which version existed when
Stability’s 22 October 2024 release introduced Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large and Large Turbo; its article was subsequently updated with Medium on 29 October. The API release notes also list Large and Turbo with exact sd3.5-large and sd3.5-large-turbo parameters. Historical statements about Medium must be attached to 29 October, not assigned to the original 22 October announcement.
Why local workflows differ
An open-weight image model does not ship with one fixed editor or one universal inpainting button. It can be loaded into compatible node-based tools or integrated by developers, but editing depends on checkpoints, conditioning, compatible extensions and VRAM. A good local operating procedure fixes model hash, sampler, seed, inference parameters and reference file rather than trusting a UI’s default values to be stable across upgrades.
The commercial threshold
Stability’s July 2024 community-license explanation permits many noncommercial uses and free commercial use below a stated US$1 million annual revenue threshold; larger commercial uses require a separate enterprise arrangement. This is not a public-domain dedication or an unlimited sublicense. Revenue is measured across the business under the license language, not merely sales from images. Record the exact license accepted and seek formal counsel for complex redistribution or derivative-model projects.
Quality control and the practical choice
Choose self-hosting when reproducibility, data handling, model customization or batch workload justifies infrastructure; choose a managed API when maintenance and patching are a higher burden. Test prompt fidelity, hands and faces, text accuracy and inpaint seams on identical inputs. Avoid reproducing vendor leaderboard claims as independently established comparisons and keep AI 10 unit economics outside this evergreen technical page.
Worked scenario and failure test
A small game studio might need hundreds of fantasy-environment thumbnails while keeping reference sketches private. A local SD3.5 workflow is attractive only after measuring its actual hardware cost and capturing the model checksum and sampler settings. Run ten fixed prompts on the chosen Large, Turbo or Medium variant, then compare recognizable artifact classes against the studio’s art direction. Do not let a successful local render stand in for rights approval: the Community License’s revenue condition applies to the organization. The October 22 and October 29 release dates should also be reflected separately in historical model cards.
Decision guide and practical handoff
Pin hashes and variant; distinguish local inference license from a managed API contract. A responsible review packet names the exact source or model version, the permitted input assets, the requested operation and the image characteristics a reviewer must check. It should also contain an unaltered reference, the accepted derivative, and a short record of what changed. A supported feature is not necessarily a reliable one for every brief, and the team must approve both technical appearance and real-world truthfulness before distribution.
Availability, price and geographic limitations
Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Release dates and historical tier details above are explicitly dated. Unless independently confirmed for a named country and account tier, current availability, billing currency, credit consumption, API quota and commercial entitlement are unknown—not universal. Consult official regional terms and AI 10’s dated price snapshots before procurement; do not treat a historical announcement as a live entitlement. No application, model, API response or image output was hands-on tested for this article.
