Gemini CLI is an open-source terminal agent, but a 2025 setup guide and an October 2026 purchasing decision are not interchangeable. Google’s project README says unpaid-tier and Google One usage moved to Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026. Teams should preserve the distinction between an existing CLI installation, supported enterprise authentication and an active consumer entitlement.
Capabilities and integration boundaries
The official project describes a terminal application for exploring a repository, modifying files, running shell commands and adding MCP extensions. Its repository includes setup guidance for authentication, trusted folders, headless execution, checkpointing and sandboxing. A terminal integration is not automatically an IDE extension: the command runner operates with filesystem and process access under its chosen restrictions.
A reproducible developer workflow
For a historical project, record the original date, installed package version, authentication method, and precise error message before diagnosing an access failure. For active enterprise use, first confirm that the account, provider endpoint and license still support the client; then inspect the configured sandbox and trusted-folder policy. Start with a non-sensitive repository and a request to summarize tests without altering files.
Limitations and failure cases
Old articles that call Gemini CLI universally free describe an obsolete entitlement after 18 June 2026. The GitHub repository continuing to exist does not demonstrate continued support for every account type. Different command modes can have different tool privileges, and successful model login says nothing about whether a package install or dangerous shell command is safe.
Data handling, approvals and security
Use a dedicated working copy, prevent access to production environment files, and require approval for commands that touch network, installation or secrets. The official sandbox documentation documents tool-execution restrictions and potential expansion requests; test the actual version before relying on the default. A prompt embedded in a README or issue should be treated as source text, not administrator authority.
Who should adopt it
Use the product as a historical reference or after validating a currently eligible enterprise path. For an individual user redirected from the older CLI, examine Google’s current Antigravity CLI migration path rather than reinstalling Gemini CLI in hopes of restoring the previous entitlement.
Alternatives and decision trade-offs
Compare Kiro CLI for migrated AWS workflows, or Qwen Code and OpenCode if a configurable terminal tool is the priority. Evaluate each tool with identical permission and network constraints rather than feature-name matching.
Version, region and entitlement caveats
Research and first-party documentation checked on 25 October 2026 (cutoff date). Documented version or status scope: 2026-06-18 consumer-access transition. The documentation does not independently establish availability in every country, an exact installed client release, a universal enterprise contract, or a perpetual price. No unverified seat price, request quota, API rate, model entitlement or commercial-license guarantee is supplied here. Check AI 10 dated pricing snapshots and the signed agreement before procurement. The examples are suggested evaluation methods, not experiments or benchmarks performed for this article.
Checklist before production rollout
- Record the exact installed version, service account, organization policy and contract or plan applicable to the tested environment.
- Create a clean worktree; specify the task boundary, forbidden paths, acceptance criteria and rollback before tool execution.
- Audit file, shell, network, extension and repository-app permissions; deny all unnecessary credentials and privileged actions.
- Review each resulting diff for unrequested packages, automation changes, data leaks and behavioral regressions.
- Run targeted tests, existing integration/regression tests and independent code/security review in a trusted environment.
Consumer-account migration is not enterprise deprecation
Google specifies that the 18 June 2026 change concerned individual, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra sign-in routes for the older IDE extensions and CLI. Standard and Enterprise subscribers have a different access path. The official Antigravity CLI migration guide covers configuration and credential handling; do not assume a CLI package change automatically migrates all extensions, policies, or provider entitlements.
