Fast code completion can feel productive while introducing more deletion, rework or defects than a slower suggestion. A credible evaluation of coding tools needs separate measures for response time, accepted tokens, retained edits and correctness; no vendor-reported productivity multiplier is a substitute.
What the product actually does
Huawei’s official editor guide explicitly ties completion to a built-in latency-oriented model and distinguishes single-line from multi-line suggestions. Baidu’s official guide describes inline completion and refactoring experiences. These documents establish which interaction types exist, but they do not provide a neutral comparison between tools. The key methodological distinction is that time to first suggestion describes system responsiveness, while downstream work determines whether the suggestion helps a real task.
A controlled evaluation workflow
Build a consented sample of typical tickets with reproducible repository commits, deterministic test commands and developer review. Capture time from editor pause to suggestion, whether the developer accepts the suggestion and how much remains after the task is merged. Track the rate at which accepted snippets are later edited out, build failures, security findings and reviewer-requested changes. Analyze medians and tail latency separately so one slow network request does not dominate results.
Limitations and version boundaries
Acceptance rate can be gamed by accepting trivial or incorrect suggestions. Token counts favor verbose code and may penalize concise implementations. Developers also differ in familiarity with editor shortcuts and programming languages. Use a crossover design with multiple experienced participants, randomize assignment order and record the exact client, model endpoint and network region. If sample sizes are too small, report observations rather than a definitive ranking.
Repository security and data governance
Avoid capturing actual proprietary code in unauthorized analytics. Log derived timings and task IDs, store raw samples only where consent and enterprise security policy permit, and use synthetic or approved open-source tickets for external comparisons. A plugin update or server-side model switch can invalidate the comparison; preserve test-environment metadata and re-run a subset after changes.
Who should consider it
This guide helps engineering leads choose a completion-first tool for daily coding without pretending that an agent capable of writing whole branches is directly comparable. A balanced result can favor lower latency for repetitive boilerplate and stricter human control for sensitive logic. Acceptance and correctness should be reported side by side.
Alternatives and engineering trade-offs
For autonomous coding agents, use task-completion and review quality metrics instead. A completion plugin and a PR review bot solve different jobs and should not appear on one arbitrary score scale.
Acceptance and reproducibility checklist
- Record the exact installed version, plugin publisher, identity provider, workspace and server/model selection; public documentation may describe a newer build.
- Use a nonproduction repository without real secrets, with fixed acceptance tests and a known starting commit; note the country, tenant and contracted edition.
- Record approval prompts, repository and network permissions, all files changed, commands invoked and failure paths as distinct observations.
- Review source changes and explanations against requirements; run tests, static checks and security scans independently; block unapproved deployment.
- Retain evidence of a human review, rollback and access-revocation plan, and route all unverified price, region and contract items to the responsible owner.
Dates, commercial terms and what remains unknown
This is an editorial snapshot as of 25 October 2026. Scope: 2026-10-25 vendor documentation snapshot. Sources below are first-party descriptions and should not be treated as independent hands-on results. Exact plan pricing, seat allowances, general worldwide availability, commercial license guarantees, model IDs and contractual retention terms are not claimed without dated evidence. Where a living documentation page lacks a publication date, this article does not project its features backward. Editorial status is distinct from WordPress publication: the shared import contract has not been checked.
