Synthesia Photo Avatars: Consent Video, Identity Match and Safe Production

Turning a single portrait into a talking presenter is a production convenience with significant identity risk. Synthesia’s July 2026 documentation requires a live consent video from the same person depicted in the photo. The vendor explicitly rejects public-figure images and subjects without clear consent. This is not an optional step that a client, editor or employer can replace with ownership of the photograph alone.

What the documentation actually establishes

The vendor’s July 20, 2026 guide describes Personal Avatars from Photo on paid plans and lists plan-specific avatar allowances: Starter three, Creator five and Enterprise unlimited. Those numbers are a dated entitlement snapshot, not a promise of permanent quotas or unlimited output minutes. Model quality can vary with facial details, expression and apparent movement; the moderation page acknowledges possible visual imperfections.

How a producer would use it

Start by obtaining a clear written brief describing the audience, scripts, languages and duration of consent, then have the actual subject complete the required live video. Store a consent reference without publishing the raw verification recording. Choose an approved photograph with a suitable neutral background, test short non-sensitive text, and review lip movement, face likeness, clothing, body language and intended tone. A second review by the subject is good practice before wider deployment.

Failure cases and human review

Neither technical identity verification nor an approved first render proves consent for a new campaign several months later. The original permission might exclude political endorsement, product advertisements or voice-cloning. Generations can change facial proportions or express emotions that the subject did not perform. Disclose synthetic presentation when necessary to avoid misleading viewers and prevent unauthorized use by restricting account roles.

When this workflow makes sense

Choose this workflow when the real subject can participate and wants a reusable avatar for authorized communication. Use an ordinary recorded presenter if emotional authenticity or legal testimony is central. Plan allowances and generation credits should be tracked separately. An image-to-avatar feature is not a license to impersonate celebrities or to produce a convincing face without the person’s participation.

Production checklist

  • Collect scoped consent before uploading portrait
  • Require the same person’s live verification video
  • Limit avatar access and campaign scope
  • Review generated face and words before publication
  • Recheck plan allowance and usage rights at time of use

Documentation and public product announcements describe vendor-supported workflows; this article does not claim access to a paid account, independent video tests or measured output quality. Confirm availability, rights and generation costs for the exact model, account tier and region immediately before production.
