Perplexity Comet: browsing with AI assistance while keeping task permissions narrow

Comet is a browser with a built-in AI assistant, distinct from the Perplexity web-search application.

Comet is a browser with a built-in AI assistant, distinct from the Perplexity web-search application. It can use current-page context for research and actions, but a context-aware browser requires users to understand which content a request shares with the assistant.

What this is — and who should use it

Comet is relevant to readers who research across tabs and may connect personal productivity accounts. Perplexity announced broad availability on October 2, 2025. That historical launch statement does not guarantee that all background-assistant, device or account features are available universally without restrictions.

A real-world decision workflow

When reviewing an annual report, ask the assistant to find statements on revenue recognition on the currently open page. Inspect the cited passage and compare with the primary PDF. Then open a second document, ask for an explicit difference table and tag each row with its source. If the workflow suggests sending an email or editing a record, examine the action and recipient before approving anything.

Onboarding, access and deployment

Start with the browser and avoid linking mail or calendar accounts until an actual task requires them. If an integration is needed, use the connector approval flow and review the requested scope. Keep browsing-task permissions separate from account-wide permissions. The user should confirm whether relevant browser-history context is attached to an answer instead of assuming the assistant sees only visible text.

Capability limits and unreliable assumptions

A browser assistant is vulnerable to irrelevant page instructions, inaccessible paywalled content and stale content. A citation can locate a page without proving the generated interpretation. Delegated actions pose greater risk than summarization: a third-party page can contain adversarial instructions, and an automated click can have durable consequences. Deep agent execution details belong to the agent-security and orchestration guide.

Privacy and security boundaries

The Perplexity Comet privacy FAQ describes local browsing data and the selective sharing of relevant data when users request actions; connected services such as email require opt-in authorization. The general Perplexity privacy notice was updated October 19, 2026 and explicitly covers Comet, while enterprise/API offerings can operate under separate terms. Consult both the browser settings and applicable notice.

Exports and switching costs

Keep a standard set of bookmarks, source URLs, exported notes and documents outside the assistant chat. Before migrating browsers, confirm the version’s bookmark, history and credential migration options; do not mistake a privacy statement about local storage for a comprehensive portable export guarantee.

When an alternative is better

Choose Comet when browser-integrated research and optional assisted action are central. Dia provides a different tab-and-workspace design, while Perplexity Search alone is preferable if you do not want browser-level context in the assistant.

Pricing, language and regional availability

No plan pricing or universal entitlements are asserted here. A feature documented for one deployment, market or device is not automatically available elsewhere. Check the provider’s dated pricing and local support documentation; the separate dated pricing archive should hold historical price snapshots.
