A multi-speaker transcript is more useful than one uninterrupted text wall, but inferred speaker labels need review before they become attributed quotes.
What the service returns
Amazon Transcribe documentation describes speaker partitioning in batch and stream, with numbered labels and per-segment timestamps. The guide says it can differentiate up to 30 unique speakers under the documented configuration. That is an upper technical setting, not a promise that a crowded press conference with 30 overlapping microphones will be labeled accurately. The API uses settings such as ShowSpeakerLabels and MaxSpeakerLabels.
The useful distinction from channel identification
If a call is already recorded with the customer on one channel and the agent on another, channel metadata can be more reliable than asking the model to infer the voices in mono audio. Speaker partitioning is appropriate when multiple people share an audio channel. Avoid downmixing high-quality channel-separated source recordings before deciding whether diarization is required.
Review the difficult minutes
Audit the first and last turns, rapid interruptions, music segments and any passage where two participants overlap. Speaker IDs are arbitrary; spk_0 is not the customer by definition. For interviews, a human can compare the voice with a verified speaker roster and assign a name in a separate editorial layer. Correctly transcribed words can still be assigned to the wrong speaker.
Use in sensitive workflows
For employment, legal, medical or financial proceedings, retain the source audio and document all corrections. Protect account numbers and private data in both audio and JSON. Never decide who consented, authorized a payment or admitted a fact solely from diarization output. Set a human escalation trigger when two speakers are confused or the record will be used as evidence.
What to compare
Managed alternatives include Azure batch transcription, Deepgram diarization and ElevenLabs Scribe. Test the same files and quantify speaker-confusion errors as well as words. Include total processing and editorial correction time in cost analysis; a cheap per-minute recognizer can be expensive if every conversation needs reconstruction.
Worked production example
Picture a recorded call with a sales representative and a customer each on a dedicated channel. The most reliable label may be the recording channel, not a diarization algorithm. If the same call is captured through a single conference microphone, speaker partitioning can help, but common interruptions may produce switched labels. An editor should mark every consequential statement with the actual verified participant rather than accepting that the first speaker must be the customer. This is particularly important for refunds, agreements or compliance audits.
Practical acceptance gate
Send representative telephone-bandwidth, studio and noisy-room recordings through the exact chosen job path. Check speaker IDs at beginnings, endings and overlap boundaries, then quantify time spent fixing confusion. Preserve the raw audio and annotate the transcript as machine-generated until reviewed. Strip private customer identifiers from public examples; the fact that a system can label thirty speakers is not permission to identify any of those people or to disclose their conversation.
