A monthly coding subscription may have both a fixed seat fee and variable AI-credit accounting. Compare plans on actual team usage rather than interpreting an included credit amount as cash the buyer owns.

Individuals and teams are different contracts
GitHub’s Copilot plan page lists an individual Free option and paid Pro, Pro+ and Max choices, with headline USD monthly seat prices shown publicly. The captured individual reference shows Pro at $10 per user monthly, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100. Business and enterprise purchasing can involve different plans, negotiated terms and organisation controls; individual prices do not substitute for a business procurement quote.
A plan fee is a subscription entitlement, not a direct API token rate. Teams cannot infer the cost of a Claude or OpenAI API call from the Copilot seat price or assume their separate API accounts are covered.
What included credits actually mean
The public plan page describes GitHub AI Credits for premium Copilot features, with listed monthly total credits and changing flex allowances. For the captured individual plans it shows $15 in monthly total credits on Pro, $70 on Pro+ and $200 on Max. Those credits govern eligible usage under GitHub’s rules; they should not be treated as a refundable cash balance or converted to a fixed number of model calls without the current per-operation debit schedule.
Do not compare plans simply by dividing quoted credit dollars by the seat fee. The credit units and the number of included completions or agents differ by plan, and GitHub says additional allotments may change over time.
A defensible three-person example
If three developers purchase Pro at the listed $10 monthly seat price, the fixed subscription component is 3 × $10 = $30 before tax. That is only a baseline. The plan may include eligible completions and an AI-credit budget; an organisation could incur additional approved charges or need a different business tier. The arithmetic does not establish the volume of accepted code or productive developer time.
When preparing budgets, classify free-feature limits, included credits, charges beyond allowance, and any separately billed tool or cloud runtime. Verify which activities actually consume GitHub AI Credits under the plan used.
Avoid fake ROI promises
A developer assistant’s value depends on task complexity, code-review burden, security posture, reliability and whether the generated changes pass tests. A higher plan can be worthwhile for heavier agent usage but does not guarantee increased engineering throughput. Define a pilot: track developer time, code acceptance, regression tests, review rework and resolved tickets. Do not claim that the tool was independently tested for this article.
For regulated repositories, organisation access controls, audit logging and intellectual-property policies can dominate the choice. The pricing team can document the cost boundary without ranking model capability; hand the final decision to the evaluation team.
Plan changes and international billing
Product pages can change at any time, particularly included AI-credit amounts, promotions and feature entitlements. The 25 October 2026 checked source does not identify original effective dates for every tier. Preserve a timestamped plan snapshot and avoid backdating it to earlier versions of Copilot. USD headline prices may exclude tax, and local checkout currency, annual billing and discounts require separately verified evidence.
Keep the Copilot subscription ledger separate from developer-owned OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS or Google API charges. A code assistant can indirectly create downstream cloud bills that are not included in its seat fee.
Pricing evidence boundary
This cost discussion concerns GitHub (GitHub Copilot individual). Reproduce a quote only with its exact model or plan identifier, chargeable unit, billing region, processing mode and timestamp; a changing vendor rate card is not a permanent price guarantee. If any one of these dimensions is missing, keep the associated rate and worked scenario under editorial review instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
