A model may be included in a chat subscription while API traffic is metered by token. Claude Sonnet 5 illustrates why separating those contracts avoids false cost estimates.
Commercial evidence policy: The figures in this article are documented first-party list references checked on 25 October 2026, with any original publication or effective date separated in the data files. Account eligibility, geography, tax, billing cadence and volume commitments can alter actual invoices; unknown effective dates remain null.
The June launch and August price correction
Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 on 30 June 2026 and named the developer model claude-sonnet-5. Its announcement specified $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. A visible 10 August 2026 edit clarified that these introductory prices became permanent; the previously signaled $3 input and $15 output tariff for September should not be treated as having gone into effect. A pricing archive needs the edited publication chronology, not simply the first headline somebody saw.
What the chat plan includes—and what it does not
The release described Sonnet 5 as the default for Free and Pro chat and accessible in Max, Team and Enterprise. That availability statement does not give purchasers an unlimited API token entitlement, and it does not reveal a universal per-seat quota for everyone. Workspace settings, plan limits and availability policies are separate from invoices generated by an API key. Do not infer a consumer monthly fee from the API price, or infer an API credit from the fact that a model appears in a chat picker.
Forecast with separate input and output
For an illustrative 900,000 billed input tokens and 240,000 output tokens, the launch rates give 0.9 × $2 plus 0.24 × $10, or $4.20 before caching, tool charges and taxes. This is not a claim that any particular workflow uses that many tokens. If the same work is performed through a hosted agent, its subscription or third-party tool charges cannot be reconstructed from this token formula. Record the billed endpoint and request usage, then reconcile the invoice.
Preview, effort, and geographic modifiers
A version label and an effort setting affect the eventual tokens consumed; even when the price per token is unchanged, a longer answer costs more. Prompt caching, region-specific inference and batch processing may have distinct multipliers or eligibility rules. Check the actual account and endpoint used, rather than treating a published list-price table as a guaranteed checkout amount in every territory. Sonnet 5 pricing should never be silently substituted for later Sonnet 5.5 models.
Before choosing a paid tier
Obtain the billing quote for the exact Anthropic product, account geography, tier, model or subscription, currency and commitment length. If the provider offers several kinds of meters, forecast each independently rather than summing quantities in incompatible units. The relevant captured meters here include input_tokens_per_1m, output_tokens_per_1m. Build a low, expected and high workload from your own request logs or editorial schedule; a pricing page is not a credible estimate of how many retries or approvals your team will need.
For governance, add an approval threshold for paid overages, reconcile invoices with metered activity, and schedule a quarterly or release-triggered source audit. The absence of an identified enterprise rate, promotional expiry or regional tax line is not evidence that the amount is zero. This guide does not represent a product trial, capability benchmark, procurement offer or warranty of uninterrupted access.
Historical availability and boundaries
Preserve the precise source version, checked date and any stated effective date before reusing these figures. A model launch announcement may confirm an introductory token rate without proving which private offers remain available; a mutable plan page can describe a later product state. If a source changes after this cutoff, publish a new snapshot instead of silently editing the historical record. Specialised product evaluations belong to the relevant AI 02–09 editorial teams, while this article documents the billing model and its limitations.
Pricing evidence boundary
This cost discussion concerns Anthropic (claude-sonnet-5). Reproduce a quote only with its exact model or plan identifier, chargeable unit, billing region, processing mode and timestamp; a changing vendor rate card is not a permanent price guarantee. If any one of these dimensions is missing, keep the associated rate and worked scenario under editorial review instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
