Eleven Music is an API and creative interface for generating music from prompts, but generation capability and permission to distribute a recording are separate questions. The provider publishes different rights for plans and downstream uses.
Define the generation and model version
The company’s August 2025 announcement introduced Eleven Music to API developers. Documentation describes prompt-based composition, genre and instrumentation controls, vocal or instrumental output and composition plans. It also documents Music v2 and v2.5 model identifiers as distinct options. Do not mix the behavior of a web interface default with an API default: where the API requires model_id, pin it in each generation record so later documentation changes do not obscure what was used.
Delivery formats and integration
The music compose API is documented as POST /v1/music and supports output formats chosen by the API. Exact codec and sample rate depend on the requested format and model: these are generation properties, not indicators of perceptual quality. For a game or documentary, generate a small arrangement first, inspect transitions, and export a suitable master. A stem-based editing workflow may be more controllable than repeatedly regenerating a complete track.
Commercial use is not one permission
The vendor publishes Music Terms with plan-specific rights, including differences for streaming distribution and film, television, radio and large studio games. Its general statement that music is cleared for broad commercial use must be read alongside those restrictions. A team should preserve a dated copy of the exact rights table, plan name, licensee, work ID and use case. Individual creator use and enterprise distribution can require different entitlements; no legal ownership conclusion can be inferred from a marketing sentence.
Rights of reference tracks and lyrics
Uploading a short audio reference requires authority to use that source. The provider says it screens copyrighted references and uses them to guide style rather than remixing the original, but screening cannot replace an organization’s rights checks. Avoid copyrighted lyrics, identifiable artists and unlicensed melodies in prompts. Disclose generated music where an audience or distribution platform requires disclosure; save prompt history and audio hashes to document provenance.
Decision and acceptance workflow
For a podcast intro, write a brief with tempo, instrumentation, opening beat and an instrumental-only requirement. Generate a few candidates, have an editor listen for melodic similarity and unwanted vocals, then verify the applicable license before embedding the approved version. Track usage separately for music generations, high-quality exports and API access. Costs change by plan and must be linked to AI 10, while sync rights clearance remains a legal and contractual gate.
Pricing, permissions and date scope
All changing statements are scoped to documentation consulted by 25 October 2026. Model and account support, rights, language coverage, endpoint configuration and regional access can change. This article does not assert first-hand testing, an independent benchmark, present-day tariff, guaranteed authorship or unconditional commercial rights. Recheck the exact subscription, license and supported region before production.
