Tencent Cloud Realtime ASR: WebSocket Framing, Language Models and Operational Limits

A live recognizer is a transport protocol as much as a model. Tencent publishes a WebSocket route, but its international and Chinese documentation must not be silently collapsed into one identical product.

Read the endpoint and authentication contract first

Tencent describes streamed audio recognition with authentication material including application identifiers and request signing. The international documentation explicitly flags its API 2.0 conventions as different from API 3.0. Copying an example between them without checking parameters and error handling is unsafe. Confirm the actual endpoint in the project region, create narrowly scoped API credentials and keep signatures on the server. A browser should never embed a permanent cloud secret in downloadable JavaScript.

Send audio at the documented pace

The Chinese WebSocket reference describes 8 kHz or 16 kHz, 16-bit mono audio and a recommended one-to-one transmission rate: roughly 200 milliseconds of captured audio per 200 milliseconds of wall time. Overspeeding can overload the request while long idle gaps may break the session. Use a monotonic audio clock, bounded jitter queue and reconnect strategy. Transcoding an unsuitable codec is not solved by relabeling bytes as PCM; decode and resample correctly before streaming.

Language models are an entitlement, not a promise of universal accuracy

Tencent lists multiple language selections via an engine-model parameter, including several Southeast Asian languages and Arabic in international documentation. The exact inventory can differ by service and account. Validate the selected locale with regional accents, code switching, company names and noisy headset audio. If an organization operates from outside the documented region, ask Tencent about eligibility and data movement rather than inferring worldwide availability from an English API page.

Build a transcript revision layer

A live captioning UI should distinguish provisional text from final text. Persist packet timestamps and text updates, tolerate duplicates after reconnect, and handle speakers pausing or changing language. For call-center analytics, a human QA sample should inspect legal disclaimers and numbers in addition to aggregate recognition error. Synchronization and error recovery deserve acceptance tests as much as model choice.

Where it fits

Tencent is a plausible option for an organization that already uses its cloud infrastructure and needs streaming speech input. Batch subtitle conversion, however, may be cheaper and operationally simpler using file-recognition modes. Never compare the two solely using an unverified per-minute tariff. Measure the complete app journey: mic capture, encoding, upload, partial hypothesis, final hypothesis and downstream action.

Evidence, availability and commercial-rights boundary

Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Provider documentation is evidence of its published interface or policy, not independent product testing. No performance score, hands-on trial, customer consent, territory-wide entitlement or legal clearance is claimed. Confirm the exact version, selected region, voice rights, data flow, account limits and current service terms before deployment. Unknown model release dates, account prices and plan limits are deliberately left unasserted; monetary claims belong to the separately dated AI10 pricing ledger. Where documentation is undated or dynamic, the public page is not treated as an archival snapshot of every earlier tier.
