The practical decision
When an interview has three voices, transcription says what was spoken and diarization says which segments seem to belong to the same voice. pyannote.audio provides tooling for the latter. Its Community-1 and Precision-2 options should not be collapsed into one product rating: one is an open pipeline and the other is a premium offering with different operating assumptions.
What official documentation establishes
The official repository compares a legacy 3.1 pipeline with Community-1 and Precision-2 on named datasets, using diarization error rate. It also documents local Python usage and premium integration. The September 2025 benchmark table is useful for identifying what the vendor tested, but a lower figure on one meeting corpus does not establish an equally large improvement on noisy phone calls or recordings in an unrelated language.
A workflow that can be audited
A practical application first normalizes audio channels and timestamps, runs speech activity and speaker segmentation, then aligns the resulting labels with a separate ASR transcript. Keep the segment time interval as the primary join key; words and speaker boundaries may not line up neatly. In a hearing or podcast recording, preserve the original audio and all review edits so the final record remains auditable.
Where the system can fail
The major failure mode is overlap. Two people can speak simultaneously, yet a downstream subtitle editor may expect one label per interval. Speaker-count estimates can also split one person into multiple clusters when microphone conditions change. Unlike voice identification, a label such as SPEAKER_01 does not attest to a legal name. Do not auto-fill identities from a meeting invitation without review.
How to evaluate it without inventing tests
Reproduce evaluations using a reference diarization annotation, clear collar policy and an explicit treatment of overlapping speech. Include telephone, conference-room and lavalier microphones. Measure diarization error and the number of unattributed words after ASR alignment. Vendor tables serve as background for designing a test, not as the results of a test performed for this site.
Consent, licensing and operating costs
Local use may meet some data handling requirements better than sending raw recordings to a hosted provider, but the hardware, model download, dependencies and storage still require security review. Verify licenses for the chosen checkpoint separately from the toolkit code; premium licensing and terms must be negotiated where applicable. Pricing for cloud premium service remains unverified here.
Alternatives and the publication boundary
Choose Community-1 when the team values local control and can maintain a pipeline, and consider Precision-2 when a supported premium deployment and improved reference outcomes justify a contract. If a single API must also return the words, explore joint ASR-diarization models—but do not equate joint output with human-grade speaker identification.
