Langfuse traces and evaluations can expose the sequence of model and non-model operations, but observability cannot replace application authorization or outcome verification.

What a trace should contain
Langfuse documentation describes tracing for agent applications and connecting those traces to evaluation workflows. Trace usefulness depends on the fields your application emits: a run ID, parent workflow, tool name, model identifier, latency, retry count and result classification. Link spans for retrieval, tool use, approval and the final external transaction. Without a common operation ID, a trace may stop at a claimed success while the destination system recorded something different.
Protect sensitive material
Observability platforms can receive user prompts, file contents, output text and tool arguments. Design a redaction strategy before collecting production traffic. Decide whether to store only identifiers and classifications for sensitive operations, and who can search traces across tenants. Test deletion, retention, exports and backup behavior against the exact deployment. Vendor self-hosting options do not automatically satisfy a jurisdiction’s legal requirements; confirm the actual infrastructure and contracts.
Evaluation loop
Create a dataset from sanitized failures, add expected outcomes and run the same tasks against proposed releases. Langfuse documents manual and automated evaluation methods; use deterministic checks for authorization and syntax, human reviewers for complex factual judgments and calibrated model-based graders only for appropriate qualitative tasks. Watch the errors hidden beneath mean scores, such as wrong-recipient sends or a small number of unauthorized calls.
Operational example
A document-intake workflow emits a span for extraction, one for schema validation, one for a reviewer decision and one for the draft write. Its external-state verification is a separate event. Operators can distinguish a malformed field from a rejected approval or a tool timeout. In an incident, pause writes and use those records to investigate without asking a model to rewrite history.
Alternatives
LangSmith and Phoenix offer overlapping diagnostics and evaluation concepts. Choose based on integration, data controls, deployment and alert requirements rather than feature counts. Capture current plans and regional storage terms in a separate dated record; this article makes no price or hands-on benchmark claim.
An acceptance test for an observability setup
Simulate a denied tool request, a tool returning malformed JSON and a timeout after a successful draft write. Confirm that an operator can separate these three outcomes through trace identifiers and application events. Test whether a log viewer from one tenant can search another tenant’s data. In an audit, report the captured run fraction and any events sampled out of traces; an unobserved step is not automatically a step that never happened. Keep tracing overhead visible in latency reports.
