Agent budget planning must account for the whole execution graph rather than multiplying one prompt by a token price. Each attempt can invoke several tools, retrieve data, produce multiple model calls and retry failed work. Budget control requires per-run and per-tenant stop conditions before the request reaches a vendor bill.
How it works
Separate deterministic cost units: input tokens, output tokens, cache reads or writes where documented, external API calls, browser session runtime, vector operations, storage, logging and human review. Define each unit’s time-stamped price in the AI 10 ledger, then compute expected cost from observed usage. Do not treat model price tables as complete TCO; a free-looking model response may still produce paid browser minutes, connector actions or lengthy trace retention.
A practical, bounded workflow
A research workflow receives a hard currency budget and maximum number of model/tool calls. The controller estimates cost before each call from the current rate card and remaining allowance. A large retrieval expansion or retry chain may trigger a request for revised scope instead of running unbounded. When provider invoices arrive, reconcile billed units and measured use; investigate discrepancies rather than altering the original run estimate.
Failure modes and limits
A frequent error is excluding failed attempts and cache-write traffic. Another is guessing that historical plan pricing still applies. Retries should have explicit unit ceilings and failed tasks should retain their metering record. Budget exhaustion must prevent further billable tools, not merely instruct the model to ‘use fewer tokens’.
Deployment controls
Keep the model in the proposal stage. The control service must authenticate the approver, bind the decision to an exact payload hash and commit through an idempotent destination adapter. Log approvals, rejections, timeouts and unknown settlement separately. A successful model response or tool-call syntax is never proof of economic settlement.
When to choose this approach
Compare workflows at the same quality threshold, not solely the cheapest model cost. Prefer deterministic classification or user clarification when it removes unnecessary calls. Quotes, regional taxes and promotional periods are external commercial facts and remain null unless the relevant provider version, market and effective date have been verified.
What to evaluate before production
Track actual usage distribution per completed outcome and per rejected/aborted outcome, including percentiles. Test a deliberately looping agent and a third-party 429 response to confirm budget cutoffs. Document the formula, units and timestamped rate snapshot so another reviewer can independently recalculate the budget.
Version, market and tier caution (25 October 2026): This is a technical and operational guide, not a live entitlement, pricing or geographic-availability certification. Numeric commercial limits and undocumented release dates are intentionally omitted. Reconfirm the exact account, deployment region, access policy and vendor release before procurement or publication.
