A web editor’s credit balance and an API’s metered request bill are different economic objects. Teams that compare a monthly subscription fee with an apparent per-second API charge can underestimate revisions, unusable generations and post-production. This guide explains how to build a decision model before collecting dated AI 10 prices.
Scope: Global English buyer context as of 25 October 2026; exact regional and plan access are not assumed. Evidence: Vendor documentation, not independent hands-on tests. Editorial status: ready.
Evidence at a glance
| Option or route | Source-backed observation or unresolved requirement | Evidence class |
|---|---|---|
| Runway app | Specific Gen-4.5 web workflow uses a documented clip/credit model | Official provider document |
| Google Veo | Veo is marketed for multiple generation surfaces including developer integrations | Official provider document |
The unit you actually purchase
A web application may package editing, generation and downloads in a plan, while an API may charge per generated second, operation, resolution or another unit. Runway publishes Gen-4.5 clip settings and credit units for its documented web workflow; Google presents Veo through consumer and developer routes. Neither reference implies that credit amounts convert into the same dollar rate or usage conditions across tiers. Keep product surface, model version, plan, region and media duration as separate columns.
Calculate cost per approved second
Let G be all billed generated seconds, C the documented cost per billed unit, R the count of rerender attempts, and U the seconds approved after editing. Gross generation cost is G × C when that vendor actually bills by seconds; effective cost per usable second equals total eligible generation plus post-production cost divided by U. For credit-priced plans, use credits consumed and the dated plan’s credit entitlement, not a hypothetical cash conversion. Do not equate unlimited/relaxed output with guaranteed zero marginal delay.
Add operational costs
At campaign scale, failed jobs, queue waiting, content review and storage can dominate raw renders. An API pipeline also needs authentication, retries, logging, concurrency controls, idempotency and an exception queue for rejected content. A human-operated web editor can be preferable for a handful of high-touch storyboards; an API may be preferable when the same approved template generates hundreds of variants. Compare labor assumptions transparently and separately.
Legal and brand risk
Bulk automation multiplies any inaccurate logo, likeness issue or misleading claim. Require a stable prompt/template registry and a rights checklist for input assets. Store the provider model ID, approval timestamps, output checksum and link to original licensed content. A compliance reviewer should examine samples from each language and format rather than accepting a model’s average score. Generated audio, music and third-party presenter releases need their own contracts.
Build the procurement worksheet
Create rows for 10, 100 and 1,000 approved clips and scenarios for low, medium and high rerender ratios. Ask each vendor for contractual detail on queue SLA, API availability, account regional limits, watermark and export policy. Model image-to-video and text-to-video separately. Apply AI 10 price snapshots only when billing units, country, tax handling and effective dates are matched; leave missing price cells null instead of guessing.
Conditional selection
Choose a creative UI for manual shot selection, storyboard iteration and occasional campaigns. Consider API access for repeatable templated production only after performance monitoring and rights controls are built. The right answer may be a hybrid with manual creative approval upstream and automated rendition downstream. This is a methodology guide, not an independently measured cost comparison or verified worldwide catalog of API endpoints.
