OpenAI Batch API vs Gemini Batch API: Designing Reliable Offline Jobs

DOCUMENTED DETAILS

Batch APIs are designed for work that can wait. OpenAI and Gemini both document asynchronous request submission, job status monitoring and retrieval patterns. The decision for a production engineer is about job lifecycle, format, error recovery and exact model support—not a simplistic discount percentage.

Scope: Global English buyer context as of 25 October 2026; exact regional and plan access are not assumed. Evidence: Vendor documentation, not independent hands-on tests. Editorial status: ready.

How OpenAI batch jobs operate

OpenAI describes preparing a JSONL input, uploading it, submitting a batch, polling its status and retrieving completed output files. Requests carry a custom identifier used to match output with input because results are not guaranteed to be in the original order. The documentation lists statuses including validating, in progress, completed, failed and expired. A robust pipeline stores a stable business key alongside the API custom ID, then checks both output and error files before marking a batch complete.

How Gemini batching is organized

Google’s Gemini API Batch documentation describes inline requests for small jobs and input-file workflows for larger workloads, with responses retrieved after processing. It also describes a 24-hour target completion horizon and emphasizes that individual batch items may return an error rather than a normal model response. This official page changes over time and includes models that may not all have existed at this archive cutoff: do not copy its currently displayed example model IDs into a dated 2026 compatibility chart without checking their release dates.

The idempotency problem

If a network response is lost after job creation, blindly retrying can submit duplicate work. Google’s documentation explicitly cautions that creation is not inherently idempotent. Treat OpenAI creation similarly from an application-design perspective: maintain a local submission ledger with input checksum, intended model and job ID. Use a reconciliation step to look for an already-created job before retrying, and never mark an item billable twice just because its response was delayed.

Input shape and correctness

Validate JSONL for UTF-8, expected content schema, allowable model endpoint, per-record size and total quota before upload. A batch combining extraction prompts and free-form marketing copy needs separate schemas and quality criteria. Reconcile item count against planned jobs; persist errors, refusals and incomplete outputs. Avoid passing personal data without lawful processing basis and an appropriate API contract. A delayed bulk response must still be reviewed before it enters a customer-facing database.

Cost methodology without guessed rates

Both providers describe a batch-oriented lower-cost path relative to interactive processing, but model-specific rates and caching arrangements need AI 10 snapshots. Store input units, output units, any cache-related units, retry volume, region/currency and effective date. Multiply each unit by its own verified rate; do not collapse request counts into a single universal token price. Failed items may have different billing treatment and should not be estimated from a generic marketing percentage alone.

Recommendation

Choose by supported model and modality, existing authentication, operational tooling and auditable recovery path. OpenAI’s `custom_id` workflow may fit file-indexed offline extraction; Gemini’s inline/file modes may fit varied job sizes. Both require validation and error handling. This guide includes no independently measured throughput race or fixed 2026 price claim; confirm current docs and exact model availability before contracting.
