Arabic RTL AI Translation Workflows: Comparing HTML-Aware and Plain-Text Post-Editing

Arabic translation quality cannot be judged by fluent sentences alone. A usable production workflow must preserve HTML structure, treat bidirectional text correctly, control terminology and keep site navigation working. A source-aware post-editing process matters more than an unverified “best Arabic model” ranking.

The first architectural decision

Google Cloud Translation documents different supported MIME types and workflows, including `text/html` for traditional text translation routes. Its troubleshooting page explains that RTL/LTR translation may add HTML direction or alignment attributes. Those attributes can be useful but may conflict with an existing WordPress theme or CSS framework. Plain-text model output pasted into HTML can inadvertently damage links, spans and elements with non-translatable names.

Segment content without destroying markup

Extract editable text from the article body while preserving the DOM tree, IDs, classes and link destinations. Mark brand names, product IDs, code samples and legal citations as non-translatable when justified. Translate titles and alternative text as distinct fields. Keep the original English slug unless there is an explicit localization strategy; localized URL generation belongs to the site’s publishing layer, not a guess by the language model.

RTL is a layout test

Preview Arabic output in an actual right-to-left site template. Check parentheses, currency symbols, dates, serial numbers, inline Latin product names, tables and direction overrides. A correctly translated heading can still appear backwards beside an English model number. Verify that accessible reading order, screen-reader labels, quote marks and link focus are correct. Testing in a left-to-right editor alone will not catch all presentation defects.

Human post-editing checklist

A native Arabic editor reviews Modern Standard Arabic tone, target-market terminology and claims. Confirm that plural forms, gendered forms and imperatives match the brand context. Compare all numerical details with the source, especially percentages and feature availability by country. Retain source and translated segment IDs so a corrected source paragraph can trigger a targeted update without invalidating unrelated translated sections.

Choose the tool route

An HTML-aware translation API offers structural affordances when content is already marked up; a generic language model may be appropriate for heavily editorial prose if the pipeline carefully constrains output and verifies its structure. The comparison is about methods, not a claim that one provider has independently superior Arabic. For regulated or contractual language, require specialist editing irrespective of provider. No independently tested error rate or universal country support is claimed here.

Publishing and cost constraints

Record translation service, version or route, text/HTML input mode, region, source and target language, and author approval. Price by verified characters or tokens from AI 10; do not treat them as equivalent billing units. Preserve original accessibility attributes, avoid injecting generated scripts and pass translated HTML through an allowlist sanitizer. Run staging checks before publishing localized articles.
