Most historical AI comparison errors are chronology errors. Products evolve from conversational interfaces to tools with retrieval, files and agent capabilities, but this progress is not a single uniform timeline. A 2022 ChatGPT preview cannot be judged as if it had the search and file features documented in 2026.
Scope: Global English buyer context as of 25 October 2026; exact regional and plan access are not assumed. Evidence: Vendor documentation, not independent hands-on tests.

Use releases, not marketing eras
OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT is dated 30 November 2022 and describes a conversational research preview. Anthropic’s introducing-Claude announcement is dated 14 March 2023 and explicitly discusses early partners, chat and API access. Google’s December 2023 Gemini announcement introduces a new model family rather than every later app integration. These primary records establish historical anchors; they should not be read as proof of the exact contemporary capacities of the same brands.
The meaning of “retrieval”
A stand-alone model can answer from parameters and the immediate prompt without verifying sources. Retrieval-based systems bring in a search index, uploaded corpus or external tool response. The surfaced text may then be summarized by a language model. That distinction is central to procurement: it affects whether answers can be audited and updated. A chatbot with access to a web result is not necessarily a curated research database, and a citation is only useful when a reviewer can open and inspect the original material.
Compare like with like across time
Split the archive into the initial conversational-product era, subsequent platform and retrieval integrations, and later workflow/agent functions. For each product snapshot, record the date a specific feature was announced, the date it was actually accessible to the relevant audience and whether it required a separate subscription or developer endpoint. Press releases commonly describe plans ahead of availability. Never use a post-2026 help page to prove a product had the same behavior in 2020.
An acquisition checklist for an old review
When reading “Tool A is better than Tool B” from a 2023 article, identify the tested model, interface, task set, prompt and country. Look for any later model retirement or changed plan. Ask whether evidence relied on vendor demonstrations, a controlled benchmark or real blinded user testing. Most consumer preference polls do not support broad claims about factual accuracy, privacy or enterprise readiness. Unknown methodology stays unknown.
Building a reproducible history archive
Store an immutable original announcement URL and publication date, archived release notes, product/alias identity and a separate snapshot for each meaningful capability. Maintain a revision log for technical claims and avoid changing old canonical IDs during a company rebrand. If an application’s retrieval mode uses uploaded files, maintain distinctions among the original app, its search mode and its API model family. The AI 01 and AI 02 registries own named identities and version profiles.
Who should use this guide
Historians, enterprise buyers and journalists can use the framework to reject anachronistic features. It does not pretend to give a comprehensive verified release date for every service from 2020 through 2026. The broad chronology beyond the cited primary launches still needs a fully dated official timeline, so this entry remains editorial review rather than a definitive historical feature matrix.
