The same brand may operate consumer subscriptions, managed workspaces and API products under materially different data controls. A purchasing decision for internal documents must begin with the exact tenant and contract, not a consumer app feature comparison.
Comparison scope (verified 2026-10-25): A consulting company considers whether staff may use individual ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions for client files versus purchasing managed business access. Public provider privacy documentation was checked as of 2026-10-25; independent contractual legal conclusions are excluded.
Evidence at a glance
| Product, approach or evidence source | What the cited document establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | Consumer training choices and managed-workspace defaults are differentiated in its data-controls guide | No independently tested ranking, cross-vendor parity, universal plan access or current price is inferred. |
| Anthropic consumer | Consumer model-improvement preferences and safety/feedback exceptions are described separately | No independently tested ranking, cross-vendor parity, universal plan access or current price is inferred. |
| Anthropic commercial | Commercial input/output training defaults are described separately from consumer settings | No independently tested ranking, cross-vendor parity, universal plan access or current price is inferred. |
These are documented capabilities or provider statements, not results from a hands-on comparative test. Unknown competitive measurements remain unknown.
Which product is actually in scope?
A personal account, an organization tenant and a developer API project may have different retention defaults, administrator controls and model-improvement settings. OpenAI’s help documentation distinguishes personal data controls from managed workspace and API defaults. Anthropic separately explains consumer data use and commercial service training treatment. These are provider policy statements about particular offerings, not a statement that all products meet an organization’s regulatory or confidentiality obligations.
A procurement scenario
Imagine a four-person consultancy preparing a confidential acquisition memo. A convenient personal chat account may have no centralized employee departure process, policy enforcement or approved client disclosure flow. A managed tenant can offer more centralized oversight, but the vendor documentation still must be reconciled with the actual signed agreement. Enumerate every data pathway: chat input, uploaded attachments, connected applications, feedback buttons, shared links, logs and human support escalations.
Training and retention are different
An opt-out from model training is not necessarily deletion, encrypted storage, short retention or residency in a requested country. Similarly a contractual commitment not to train on input does not prove files are invisible to administrators, immune from incident response or automatically erased at a chosen date. Require answers for deletion processes, backups, subprocessors, breach notice, legal hold and export. Where jurisdiction matters, local counsel should review terms rather than treating a vendor help page as legal advice.
Operating controls
Classify what can be sent: public, internal, confidential and restricted. Apply least privilege, enforce single sign-on where available, require client permission when necessary and inventory integrations. Train staff not to place credentials into prompts or “anonymous” transcripts that include identifiers. Test employee offboarding and export before rollout. Keep model-training preferences in an approval register with a recheck date and an owner.
Decision
Consumer accounts can be appropriate for nonsensitive personal productivity; business tenancy is generally the more relevant procurement surface for governed organizational workflows. That is a decision framework, not a claim that a plan automatically complies with GDPR, HIPAA or any national framework. The actual contract, market and enabled integrations decide fitness.
Pricing, regions and comparable plans
Version-, region- and subscription-tier-specific availability is not established here. Product interfaces and entitlements can change. Access requires direct verification for the buyer’s country, account, contract and deployment as of the purchase decision. Consumer subscriptions, API billing, seats, credits and enterprise agreements must not be reduced to one “monthly price.” Link any future cost table to an AI 10 snapshot with currency, region, billing unit, effective date and source URL. No unverified numerical plan cost is included in this article.
Limits of the available evidence
The sources confirm the documented features listed above; they do not establish which provider produces better results on the privacy & enterprise choices tasks of small-business owners, compliance managers and procurement teams. No controlled product trials, comparative benchmark scores, account-level entitlements, universal language coverage, legal determinations or image rights assessments were conducted for this article. Any deployment must check the actual model version and market, record failures and obtain human approval before publication or procurement.
