An elegant translation that changes a trademark or legal term is a production defect. General chat translation and terminology-controlled machine translation should be evaluated on consistency, audit history and escape handling, not just how fluent a paragraph sounds.
Comparison scope (verified 2026-10-25): A publisher sends hundreds of English help pages into French, German and Spanish while retaining product terms, HTML and market-specific warnings. The comparison is workflow-based, not a claimed translation benchmark.
Evidence at a glance
| Product, approach or evidence source | What the cited document establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Translation | Advanced Cloud Translation lets teams create and reference terminology glossaries | No independently tested ranking, cross-vendor parity, universal plan access or current price is inferred. |
| Anthropic Projects | Project knowledge and instructions are reusable context, not a guarantee of deterministic translation | No independently tested ranking, cross-vendor parity, universal plan access or current price is inferred. |
These are documented capabilities or provider statements, not results from a hands-on comparative test. Unknown competitive measurements remain unknown.
Fluency is not terminology governance
A conversational AI system can be asked to preserve terms and style, but this instruction is different from a persistent glossary resource. Google Cloud documents glossaries used with translation calls so that terms such as proper nouns and ambiguous words can receive preferred equivalents. Even a glossary has technical constraints: the application must call it correctly, input terms must match and post-editing is still required. A chat assistant can be useful for culturally sensitive rewrites after a controlled first pass, not necessarily as the sole bulk-translation authority.
Build a source-of-truth lexicon
Create a versioned dictionary containing each canonical source term, approved market translation, prohibited alternates and explanatory notes. Include variants such as plural, punctuation and capitalization when relevant. Provide a freeze process so reviewers approve glossary changes before the next batch. Keep HTML placeholders, URLs, code spans, product identifiers and variables outside the translatable content. A fluent model may happily rewrite those elements unless the preprocessing stage preserves them.
Test beyond BLEU-like averages
Make a corpus with refund policies, names, numbers, ambiguous product vocabulary, quotations and mixed HTML. Grade terminology consistency, placeholder integrity, date/currency preservation, unwanted additions and review time. Compare the same source text and style guide across both approaches. Human raters should judge regional tone as a separate dimension from immutable term compliance. Never report a model-quality percentage without naming the corpus, languages, metric and independent evaluator.
Where human rewrite belongs
After a stable machine translation, use an editor or controlled model to adjust tone while preserving approved terms. Lock customer warnings and contractual statements from creative rewriting. Machine-assisted editing should produce a diff, never silently replace the archival English original. Keep country codes separate: Canadian French and European French may require independent policies even when the language family is shared. Technical source pages do not prove which regions and tiers support every optional translation feature.
Decision
Choose glossary-controlled translation when reproducibility across thousands of passages matters. Add general-purpose AI rewriting for tone, clarity and content adaptation only under explicit constraints. A defensible localization pipeline is source normalization, glossary application, language review, markup validation and versioned publication—not a single “translate everything” prompt.
Pricing, regions and comparable plans
Version-, region- and subscription-tier-specific availability is not established here. Product interfaces and entitlements can change. Access requires direct verification for the buyer’s country, account, contract and deployment as of the purchase decision. Consumer subscriptions, API billing, seats, credits and enterprise agreements must not be reduced to one “monthly price.” Link any future cost table to an AI 10 snapshot with currency, region, billing unit, effective date and source URL. No unverified numerical plan cost is included in this article.
Limits of the available evidence
The sources confirm the documented features listed above; they do not establish which provider produces better results on the translation & localization tasks of multilingual publishers, support operations and product teams. No controlled product trials, comparative benchmark scores, account-level entitlements, universal language coverage, legal determinations or image rights assessments were conducted for this article. Any deployment must check the actual model version and market, record failures and obtain human approval before publication or procurement.
