Automatically drafting documentation is useful only when documentation stays a reliable contract with users. Agentic writers should work from actual repository changes and tested schemas, propose a reviewable diff and never silently publish unsupported API behavior.
What the product actually does
Mintlify’s first-party changelog documents an AI Writer that proposes pull-request edits, and its quickstart describes GitHub-connected deployment. GitHub Actions separately documents token permission scopes. Together these illustrate a two-stage system: document generation needs enough context to describe the change, while publication needs a controlled repository action. Do not let the writer’s ability to edit markdown imply authority to publish it to customers.
A controlled evaluation workflow
Create a documentation task at the same time as a code/API change: describe the affected endpoint, changed error status and migration guidance. Supply the generator with relevant interface definitions and exact test fixtures, not an entire knowledge base by default. Require links to the source commit and a maintainer signature on each changed public behavior. Run markdown linting, link checks, code-example tests and an automated diff against the OpenAPI specification when available. Human reviewers should challenge any newly introduced guarantee.
Limitations and version boundaries
An assistant can invent a deprecated field, conflate two API versions or copy a private parameter into public docs. Link checks alone cannot prove factual correctness, and a generated code snippet can appear valid while failing authentication or escaping. Separate reference material from tutorial prose. A generated migration guide should state the effective version, retain older-version behavior, and include what will fail if a customer does not migrate.
Repository security and data governance
Use a GitHub App restricted to documentation repositories and CI tokens with minimum required rights. Avoid giving the agent arbitrary production docs deployment keys. Pull-request text, markdown comments and fetched issue descriptions can contain prompt-injection instructions; they must not override the publish policy. Keep a recovery path to retract an incorrect page and send corrections to affected readers.
Who should consider it
This workflow fits products that maintain docs as code and can link changes to a testable API. Without a source-of-truth schema or human subject-matter owner, automation often increases publication volume more than reliability. Measure post-publish corrections, sample accuracy and review burden—not only number of pages shipped.
Alternatives and engineering trade-offs
Manual technical writing, schema-generated reference docs and AI-assisted pull requests can coexist. The correct choice depends on how often the API changes and whether the documentation team has authoritative fixtures.
Acceptance and reproducibility checklist
- Record the exact installed version, plugin publisher, identity provider, workspace and server/model selection; public documentation may describe a newer build.
- Use a nonproduction repository without real secrets, with fixed acceptance tests and a known starting commit; note the country, tenant and contracted edition.
- Record approval prompts, repository and network permissions, all files changed, commands invoked and failure paths as distinct observations.
- Review source changes and explanations against requirements; run tests, static checks and security scans independently; block unapproved deployment.
- Retain evidence of a human review, rollback and access-revocation plan, and route all unverified price, region and contract items to the responsible owner.
Dates, commercial terms and what remains unknown
This is an editorial snapshot as of 25 October 2026. Scope: 2026-10-25 vendor documentation snapshot. Sources below are first-party descriptions and should not be treated as independent hands-on results. Exact plan pricing, seat allowances, general worldwide availability, commercial license guarantees, model IDs and contractual retention terms are not claimed without dated evidence. Where a living documentation page lacks a publication date, this article does not project its features backward. Editorial status is distinct from WordPress publication: the shared import contract has not been checked.
