As checked 2026-10-25: A subscription’s credit total is not equivalent to dollars, output tokens, images or minutes until the provider publishes an exact conversion for an operation. This is a dated economics guide, not a permanent price guarantee or a personal hands-on benchmark.
Scope: global English reference; USD list prices where shown; local eligibility, currency, taxes, negotiated terms and model release dates require separate confirmation. Dynamic source-page prices have a check date, not a verified initial effective date.
Credits are a product-specific abstraction
A subscription’s credit total is not equivalent to dollars, output tokens, images or minutes until the provider publishes an exact conversion for an operation. ElevenLabs says a shared monthly pool is consumed by multiple products with different approximate burn rates. Midjourney instead exposes fast GPU time and different access modes. Perplexity advertises bonus or computer credits within certain subscriptions. There is no defensible global ‘one AI credit equals one cent’ exchange rate across these products.
Construct a credit ledger
For each feature record the model/version, operation, input quantity, output quantity, billed credit quantity, plan, and whether a minimum unit or rounding rule applies. If 1,000 characters use a hypothetical one credit per character, 15,000 credits can cover 15 such requests, but that conversion says nothing about music minutes or image edits. Compute the credit coverage separately by operation, then apply rollover and expiry rules in the order stated in the service agreement.
The hidden constraint
A plan may have enough credits for a volume forecast but still have low concurrency, delayed queue priority or usage caps on individual features. Shared pools also create internal contention: a marketing team’s image work may consume credits earmarked for a support team’s voice transcription. Track balance by workstream and set allocation thresholds before a common pool is exhausted.
Choosing between subscription and on-demand
Subscriptions can be rational for predictable recurring workloads or licensed creator tools, but are inefficient when allowances frequently expire unused. Metered APIs are easier to attribute to individual jobs, though tool and infrastructure charges can surprise. Estimate cost per accepted job and the value of unused allowances. Never treat a temporary first-month promotion as a permanent recurring rate.
Publication policy
Publish the list subscription rate, included credit quota and operation-level burn rate in distinct rows with source links. When the burn rate varies and the vendor gives only an approximation, label it approximate and do not claim an exact generation count. Treat enterprise custom credits as null until the contract is supplied.
An internal allocation example
Consider a paid creative account with 120,000 credits for the month. An editor assigns 60,000 to narration, 30,000 to sound design and 30,000 to unplanned revisions. These are internal hypothetical envelopes, not vendor-granted sub-accounts. If the underlying service deducts all activities from one shared pool, nothing prevents one job from exhausting another’s allowance unless the organization enforces its own controls. Make credit consumption visible by job and warn when a pool approaches an agreed reserve; do not wait for a rejected production request.
Rollover is not a substitute for capacity
An expiring allowance changes the effective cost of predictable usage. For a team that purchases 100,000 credits monthly but uses only 20,000 and loses the rest, dividing subscription dollars by the full allowance understates its true realized unit cost. Analyze used credits, forfeited credits, valid carryover, extra purchased credits and operating limits separately. A credit can be valuable even if not spent, as insurance against spikes, but that business decision should be transparent rather than smuggled into a false currency conversion.
Decision checklist
- Identify the specific plan or API endpoint, model version, region and currency before pricing a job.
- Measure input, output, caching, generated media and failed-job units separately.
- Check the official pricing page again before procurement, especially if the SKU has no effective-date notice.
- Keep source evidence and a timestamped price ID; do not treat unknowns as zero.
Pricing evidence boundary
This cost discussion concerns Multi-vendor. Reproduce a quote only with its exact model or plan identifier, chargeable unit, billing region, processing mode and timestamp; a changing vendor rate card is not a permanent price guarantee. If any one of these dimensions is missing, keep the associated rate and worked scenario under editorial review instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
