Scan AI Outputs for Secrets Without Creating a Second Data Leak

If a generative system can echo API keys, credentials or internal URLs, a detector helps only when it does not forward those very secrets to yet another insecure service.

Find the real exposure paths

Secrets can appear in copied prompts, retrieved documents, model output, exported chat transcripts, traces or auto-generated code. System prompts should never be used as secret vaults. A simple policy telling the model not to repeat credentials cannot replace credential segregation and access controls.

Use layered detection

Apply deterministic matching for recognized secret formats, high-entropy heuristics and known-secret fingerprints, followed by context-aware triage. Scan before external distribution and again when records enter logs. False positives occur with test tokens; false negatives occur with fragmented secrets or unusual credential formats.

Prefer prevention to cleanup

Pass short-lived credentials to tools via a secure broker instead of writing them into a language-model context. Enforce least privilege and output sanitization at application boundaries. If a live credential escapes, revoke or rotate it and investigate access rather than merely deleting the visible sentence.

Build privacy-safe incident evidence

Record token type, affected service, time, remediation and a nonreversible fingerprint where possible. Never create a permanent unrestricted database of every exposed key as an auditing shortcut. OWASP’s 2025 GenAI risks include sensitive information disclosure and improper handling of model output.

Example

A documentation assistant suggests a configuration file containing an actual cloud access key. The export gate blocks the snippet; the security team revokes the credential and checks logs and repositories. The incident’s analysis tests both how the key entered context and why the output boundary permitted it.
