A threat-intelligence analyst receives high-volume case reports and wants ServiceNow Now Assist to propose concise investigation summaries. The source documents include machine indicators, analyst commentary and provisional classifications. A summary that turns a hypothesis into a confirmed compromise could trigger needless response actions.
The business decision before the prompt
Define separate labels for observed indicator, analyst hypothesis, confirmed finding and recommended response. Keep the original case and evidence attachment authoritative. The tool’s summary may assist the handoff, but only an authorized analyst can change case severity or direct containment.
What the vendor actually documents
ServiceNow’s May 2026 documentation describes case-summary assistance in a specified Threat Intelligence Security Center module and release. This describes the vendor’s documented capability; it is not an independent evaluation. A quoted help page is not a complete SKU, geography, contractual-retention or historical-release verification.
A practical, bounded implementation
Select sanitized historical cases representing confirmed incidents, false positives and unresolved investigations. Design a summary layout with incident identifier, timeline, indicators, source links, uncertainty, next checks and owner. Compare AI drafts against the detailed case history. The analyst annotates unsupported inferences and explicitly marks open hypotheses. Only the reviewed version is attached to the operational handoff, while the original investigation record remains unaltered. Use an approved retention policy for threat indicators and personally identifiable data.
The audit artifact
For this pilot, the acceptance record should be inspectable without reopening the entire chat history. Capture the source version, request scope, responsible reviewer, exception description and final business disposition. Where a decision changes a customer, employee, supplier or system record, keep the source-of-truth change in the authorized business application. This is a proposed governance method; no product integration has been implemented or tested for this article.
Failure rehearsal: what must not pass
A detection rule name sounds like a confirmed malware family, and an analyst writes “possible lateral movement” in a comment. The generated text must not claim lateral movement as fact. Also test a case where the most recent activity disproves the initial suspicion.
Stop conditions and escalation
Stop the pilot when a reviewer cannot establish the exact governing evidence, source eligibility or accountable sign-off for this case. Preserve the unresolved issue as a visible exception instead of turning uncertainty into an affirmative statement. A team may choose a manual process when the approval burden makes automation uneconomic; the technology is not entitled to a production role merely because it can produce a plausible paragraph.
Evaluation and full operating cost
Measure hypothesis-to-fact conversion, missing critical indicators, incorrect incident severity, reviewer minutes and post-handoff clarification requests. Separate positive and negative cases. An abbreviated summary that drops contrary evidence is a safety defect, not a writing improvement.
Build total cost of ownership from dated contract charges where verified, plus integration, source cleanup, training, reviewer labor, exception handling, access administration, error correction and a retirement path. Record numerator and denominator for every rate before the trial. Never substitute vendor-reported benchmarks, generated word count or invented minutes saved for measurements from the actual organization. Compare with an appropriate non-AI baseline and review both ordinary and exception cases.
Availability, alternative and handoff
ServiceNow’s documented feature applies to a specified module and version context; it should not be generalized to every Now Assist installation. Verify the organization’s edition, integrations, retention and deployment region with the administrator.
A simpler alternative remains an approved template, ordinary search, a controlled spreadsheet or a human-written decision log, depending on the case. Product catalogs, comparison methodologies, dated pricing snapshots and agent architecture require separate validation. This business guide covers acceptance and oversight, not proof that a feature is enabled in any particular tenant.
