An AutoGen experiment can be a useful prototype without being a reliable production workflow. Its defining question is not how many agents can talk, but who controls routing, state, tools and the final side effect. Microsoft’s Agent Framework is presented as the successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel, with migration documentation rather than a promise that old code will automatically run unchanged. Treat the migration as a behavioral change requiring tests, not as a search-and-replace exercise.
What the architecture changes
AutoGen’s agent-and-team patterns were designed around conversation and event-driven exchange. Agent Framework models workflows as typed graphs with executors and edges. That changes where control sits: the application can make a branch explicit rather than letting a conversation decide it implicitly. Map every existing AutoGen team member to a required capability, then determine whether it belongs in one agent, a non-AI function or a workflow executor. Preserve model-specific configurations separately from business logic; a model client is not a security boundary. The official migration guide identifies differences in streaming, tools, orchestration and checkpointing, so the mapping must cover all four.
A concrete, controlled workflow
Suppose an AutoGen research group has a finder, analyst and writer. First log a representative set of original runs with their inputs and citations. In the replacement, make retrieval a bounded tool, have the analyst produce a structured evidence table, reject missing references with a deterministic validator, and let the writer assemble a draft only from accepted facts. Stop before emailing or publishing. A person reviews the source-to-claim map. In a legacy GroupChat, conversational turns may have implicitly passed instructions; in a graph, the same handoff needs a declared data type and an owner. Store the workflow version with each test run so rollback identifies the actual graph.
Permissions and human oversight
Audit tool scopes before porting any tool wrappers. A read-only web search token should not become a generic cloud administrator credential during the migration. Enforce approval at the host when a proposed call deletes files, sends messages or modifies records. Untrusted retrieved text is evidence, not a higher-priority instruction, irrespective of which agent role repeats it. Persist an immutable record of requested action, operator decision and actual response. Avoid embedding secrets in conversation histories or trace payloads.
Failure modes and limits
The migration is not automatically feature-parity complete. A custom AutoGen distributed runtime, checkpoint format or termination rule may have no direct counterpart. Tool iteration defaults can differ, altering the number of calls and cost. Streaming events may be differently shaped and user-facing progress indicators may need rewriting. Do not infer that a newer orchestration library supplies database transaction guarantees. If the original prototype cannot express a deterministic approval gate, the correct destination may be an ordinary service function rather than another chat-oriented agent.
When to choose it or an alternative
Choose migration when an existing AutoGen workflow needs typed routing, maintainable deployments or new integration work. Keep an old version isolated if replacing it carries unjustified risk; Microsoft’s successor language does not itself constitute a sunset deadline. For a single read-only task, a small function-calling loop may be simpler than either system. Semantic Kernel developers should follow their separate official migration path rather than borrowing AutoGen-specific API rewrites.
How to evaluate before deploying
Build a golden-case corpus from real permitted tasks; compare the old and new systems on task completion, unauthorized tool attempts, citation correctness, tool-call count and recovery after interruption. Re-run tests with tool failures, malformed JSON, misleading search results and duplicate event delivery. Require a staging run that exercises approval rejection and rollback before routing any production traffic. Record versions of models, SDKs and deployment infrastructure independently. The task is complete only when both outputs and side effects reconcile.
Version, pricing and regional availability
Editorial scope: product documentation and documented conceptual behavior checked on 25 October 2026. Exact deployed package version, contract tier, price, quota and applicable geographic region have not been established for this record; they remain unknown rather than assumed. Where a dated release or announcement is discussed, it does not by itself prove that an individual account or region had access. Recheck moving documentation and source applicability before publication.
