An autonomous agent should not determine both the recipient and authorization for a payment. It can assist with extracting invoice details and proposing a transaction, but economic state changes require independent validation, a traceable approver and a narrowly scoped execution service.
How it works
Stripe documents PaymentIntent state transitions and idempotent requests. These APIs illustrate why an absent network acknowledgment is not the same as a failed charge. The invariant is one authoritative business transaction per approved order, not one model-generated command per prompt. The approval payload needs exact payee, amount, currency, account, fee assumptions and originating invoice identifier; any material change invalidates the approval.
A practical, bounded workflow
An accounts-payable assistant reads a verified invoice and proposes payment data. A deterministic rule checks vendor identity and purchase-order match. A named reviewer sees evidence and approves the full transaction fingerprint. Only a financial service account, outside the agent runtime, constructs a payment request with a stable idempotency key. A subsequent status read confirms completion and stores the provider transaction ID in the ledger.
Failure modes and limits
Invoice PDFs, vendor emails and website forms are untrusted data. A malicious document can contain a fake bank-change instruction or an urgent message claiming director approval. The agent must not grant that authority. Require independent verification for changes to beneficiary details and quarantine ambiguous invoices. If the gateway times out, query transaction status rather than issuing a new payment under a different key.
Deployment controls
Keep the model in the proposal stage. The control service must authenticate the approver, bind the decision to an exact payload hash and commit through an idempotent destination adapter. Log approvals, rejections, timeouts and unknown settlement separately. A successful model response or tool-call syntax is never proof of economic settlement.
When to choose this approach
Use an agent for messy document interpretation and exception drafting, not independent financial approval. An ordinary rules engine is preferable for known payment-policy criteria. Legal, banking and payment-service obligations depend on jurisdiction and contract; this technical guide makes no general compliance claim.
What to evaluate before production
Rehearse duplicate invoices, altered recipient accounts, changed amounts after approval, race conditions, declined authorization and lost gateway responses. Verify the system prevents an unreviewed write, produces no duplicate charge and can reconcile each transaction to an approved business record.
