Children, AI and Profiling: Privacy Risks Beyond the Chat Window

A child’s prompt can expose schooling, family relationships, emotional vulnerabilities and location.

A child’s prompt can expose schooling, family relationships, emotional vulnerabilities and location. AI profiling may turn such fragments into persistent inferences that the child never intended to share.

Classify the service and audience

Determine whether the product is directed at children or knowingly collects their information, which age groups are involved and how that affects consent and design. In the US, the FTC finalized COPPA amendments in 2025. The rules have defined scope, phases and conditions, not a universal age threshold for every AI service globally.

Limit collection and inference

Avoid building unnecessary emotional, behavioral or demographic profiles from casual conversations. Disable sensitive personalization by default where appropriate. Data about a parent, classmate or friend shared by a child may carry third-party privacy risk even without a direct account relationship.

Design notices people understand

Explain what is recorded, what is inferred, who can see it and how to seek help using age-appropriate language. Give parents and guardians the controls required under applicable laws without assuming that adult access to every private conversation is always appropriate or safe.

Test dangerous interaction patterns

Look for manipulative engagement, pressure to share secrets, misleading claims of human identity, personalized harmful advice and refusal failures. Evaluate across longer conversations, since English single-turn safety benchmarks do not cover sustained relationship dynamics.

Example

An educational chatbot asks for a homework topic but not a child’s full address, retains limited lesson progress and routes safety concerns to an authorized workflow. A privacy review tests deletion and profiling settings rather than relying solely on model content moderation.
