A narration budget based only on spoken words can undercount billable text. ElevenLabs explains that spaces, punctuation and certain markup contribute to the measured characters, while per-request character limits differ by model.
Verification scope: Official sources were checked for the 25 October 2026 cutoff. List tariffs and rights apply only to the documented provider, region, tier, exact model and sales channel. This is an editorial draft, not a verified account quote; unknown effective dates remain null.
What counts as a character
The vendor’s billing help states that each letter, number, punctuation symbol and space in submitted text counts toward character length; pronunciation dictionaries and SSML/audio tags can also affect the count. The exact number of billable characters is not guaranteed to match a word processor’s “characters excluding spaces” statistic. For production, log the final exact text sent to the synthesis endpoint, not an earlier screenplay export. Distinguish the number of characters submitted from actual returned audio seconds so future cost audits can reproduce the debit.
The version limit changes how you split a manuscript
ElevenLabs’ help-center model limits include up to 10,000 characters per v4 text-to-speech API request, versus different limits for other models. A longer documentary may require sentence-safe segmentation, rendering through Studio, or multiple synthesis calls. Splitting into segments can produce more revision attempts and continuity checks. The ten-thousand-character figure is a maximum input length for a route, not a ten-thousand-credit monthly allowance or a promise of exactly ten minutes of audio for every script.
Model selection changes credit economics
The pricing documentation describes one-credit-per-character rules for certain website generations and discounts for some API Flash or Turbo models. Not all voices and APIs consume credits at the same multiplier; some community voices can carry custom rates. Do not assume a v4 monthly budget from a Multilingual v2 or Flash rule without a model-specific record. For a hypothetical 9,000-character episode that is fully regenerated once, the text input is 18,000 generated characters across both requests. Whether the actual credit debit equals that number must be checked against the exact route, model and custom-voice rate.
Revisions are a real production input
Punctuation edits, spelling corrections, tone direction tags and line replacements can cause partial or full rerenders. Estimate a clean baseline plus an empirically measured revision factor from the production team’s own history. If four of ten segments require a second render, counting only approved final audio hides the work consumed by those four. Also account for tool-specific credits for dubbing, voice conversion, transcription or music as separate meters. Failing generations should be reconciled with actual usage events rather than automatically assumed free or charged.
Version-safe calculator specification
A repeatable calculator accepts exact model ID, voice ID, text length, output route, credit multiplier, number of attempts and purchased plan balance. It checks the maximum input length and flags the request for splitting when necessary; it should not assume a fixed syllables-per-minute conversion for all languages. Add taxes and subscription fees only after calculating proprietary credit consumption. The AI 05 team covers voice workflow quality, whereas this article deliberately limits itself to charging and throughput mechanics.
Decision checklist and limitations
Before purchase or deployment, retain the literal model or plan identifier, payer/merchant, country or cloud region, billing currency, exact usage meter, source URL, checked date, effective date if explicitly supported, and any plan commitment or promotional eligibility. Recalculate from the companion price and quota snapshots rather than assuming that a remembered list tariff will remain unchanged. A credit allowance, maximum input length, published token rate and confirmed billed currency answer different questions; never add them as if they were the same quantity.
When comparing another provider or route, use the same input/output distribution and acceptable result definition. Include unsuccessful attempts, optional tools, storage, tax, payment and human review only when those components are actually measured or supported by an explicit source. Vendor marketing and documentation are not independent product tests. This article makes no claim to have personally tested paid endpoints, purchased plans, or checked account-specific taxes or availability.
Pricing evidence boundary
This cost discussion concerns ElevenLabs. Reproduce a quote only with its exact model or plan identifier, chargeable unit, billing region, processing mode and timestamp; a changing vendor rate card is not a permanent price guarantee. If any one of these dimensions is missing, keep the associated rate and worked scenario under editorial review instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
