December 2025’s ChatGPT Images update emphasized precise changes without disturbing the rest of a composition, and named GPT Image 1.5 as its API version.
Which release this name describes
On 16 December 2025 OpenAI announced a new ChatGPT Images experience and identified its API image model as `gpt-image-1.5`. The company reported improvements in edit precision, dense text rendering and generation speed relative to its earlier image system. The claims are first-party statements about that launch, not independent laboratory tests. Later Images 2.0 and 2.5 releases have different names and should not be retrospectively assigned to the 1.5 model.
Editing should change one thing
Precise editing is best evaluated with an invariant checklist. Give the system an owned scene of a fictional store shelf and request only a change to the backdrop color. Mark the product shape, printed SKU number, reflections and object position as protected features. Two reviewers can compare those details against the original input at full resolution. If the requested color changed but the label moved, the edit is not acceptable; attractive output does not override the requirement.
Text-rich graphics still need exact copy QA
The 2025 announcement emphasized stronger rendering of text-heavy material. That is useful for ideating poster hierarchy, menu layouts or illustrated signs, but even a legible output can contain a wrong price, date, address or spelling. Keep the authoritative text in a separate editable layer if possible. If text becomes rasterized inside a generated image, run a character-by-character review and preserve the approved copy as a source of truth.
API versus interface migration
A consumer Images rollout and availability of `gpt-image-1.5` in an API are related but not interchangeable. Permissions, retention choices, rate limits, moderation and access may differ by product surface. Developers should keep model ID, environment and requested quality settings in each log entry. This editorial piece does not supply current costs or guarantee that a late-2026 enterprise account can still invoke the exact model.
Work through a controlled example
Proposed brief: A marketing image where only a background prop may change while product copy stays identical. Start by documenting the intended audience, target output dimensions, allowed input files and elements that must not change. Produce an initial set of candidates using only assets with cleared use rights. Label the selected version and retain rejected options; write down whether failures involved composition, incorrect text, subject drift, missing objects or insufficient detail. The procedure is a recommended evaluation protocol, not a description of a test this publication performed.
Common failure and human approval gate
Main failure to prevent: Assuming improved text rendering eliminates exact-text review. Before acceptance, review the image at the actual delivery crop and at full resolution. Compare all text against approved copy and all product, face and brand details against authorized originals. Do not rely on generated charts or signs for factual assertions. Record the approver, revisions and rights sources. A better-looking variation does not automatically satisfy legal, historical or accessibility requirements.
How to decide and what remains unknown
Evaluate against protected elements before migrating from 1.5 to newer API models. Alternatives depend on which constraint is most important: a deterministic vector editor for exact layout and trademarks, a masked editor for localized edits, a reference-guided generator for style or subject guidance, and a conventional photo workflow for documentary authenticity. Use a version-specific trial only after confirming that the chosen account actually offers the feature. No hands-on model, product or API tests were performed for this report.
Research cutoff, current availability and rights
Research cutoff and documentary check: 25 October 2026. Historical first-party material below supports the described release events and vendor-advertised operations only. The article does not establish current region-by-region availability, enterprise data retention, accessibility certification, API service levels, commercial usage rights or price. These fields remain null until independently checked for a named plan and geography, with AI 10 providing a dated cost identifier and AI 11 reviewing rights and safety claims. Rights to uploaded people, photographs, trademarks and artwork require separate clearance. The tool is not a substitute for final editorial approval.
