HunyuanVideo-1.5: Understanding 480p and 720p Models and Distilled Inference

HunyuanVideo-1.5 is not merely the earlier HunyuanVideo-I2V model on newer hardware. Tencent’s repository describes 8.3-billion-parameter architecture, distinct text-to-video and image-to-video checkpoints, and optional acceleration features. The specified minimum is 14 GB GPU memory with model offloading, materially different from the earlier I2V repository’s 60 GB 720p setup.

Versions and checkpoint names matter

Tencent dates the HunyuanVideo-1.5 release of inference code and weights to November 20, 2025. Its model catalog separates 480P T2V and I2V, their CFG-distilled variants, 720P variants and super-resolution components. Some catalog entries are explicitly marked as coming soon. That is why a version-accurate guide must never promise every named checkpoint is downloadable. The task, resolution and distillation mode belong in separate columns of a capability matrix.

What the hardware figure means

The 14 GB minimum documented in the official repository assumes offloading enabled, on a CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPU under Linux. It does not promise comfortable real-time editing on a 14 GB card. Offloading moves work between memory tiers and can increase latency. Storage speed, attention kernels, host RAM and the combination of optional acceleration features influence experience. Test actual runtime and peak memory on a particular environment before forecasting production throughput.

Distillation is a separate optimization

Tencent describes a 480p image-to-video step-distilled variant with a recommended eight or twelve steps, alongside CFG-distilled and caching options. Vendor timings and percentage improvements are reported under specified test hardware and should not be copied into unrelated machines as achieved benchmark results. The fastest path may have different editability or motion characteristics. An editorial approval test must compare the selected output with the intended source imagery rather than rewarding speed alone.

Example production plan

Use a 480p model for composition scouting, export approved test frames to a storyboard, then move selected scenes through the most appropriate 720p checkpoint or super-resolution step. Keep T2V and I2V outputs separately tagged. Verify every optional weight actually exists and that the listed command matches it. Save checkpoint hashes, seed, prompt, source image and final edit reference. Inspect lips, eyes, hands, brand marks and camera motion through the whole sequence.

Deployment and rights boundary

A downloadable model is not the same as a hosted subscription: there is no per-video vendor credit ledger, but hardware, operational maintenance and rights still have a cost. Confirm weight license details and the rights to all input performances and character designs. For occasional shots, a hosted tool may avoid infrastructure burden; for reproducibility or data-residency constraints, a properly governed local workflow can offer advantages. Neither choice should be endorsed without a task-specific evaluation.

Worked editorial scenario

A Linux workstation operator wants to generate still-driven 480p layout tests and later upscale selected shots. The HunyuanVideo-1.5 repository offers separate I2V models and distillation-related options, but an asset may be marked unavailable in the model catalog. A sensible deployment script must fail early if the selected weights are missing, emit the actual checkpoint name in logs and store the original output before any super-resolution step. The editor should compare the upscaled sequence to its lower-resolution input for fabricated texture and identity drift. This is more useful than citing a vendor speedup number without recording local hardware.
