IBM Watson’s speech API illustrates a familiar problem: a transcript can contain the right words but the wrong speaker attribution, or display the wrong numeric formatting even when recognition was acoustically reasonable.
Speaker labels and diarization limits
IBM documents a speaker_labels request parameter that assigns speaker IDs to words, and notes that enabling it also enables timestamps. The feature is optimized for two-person conversations and may handle more speakers less reliably; IBM discusses up to six. Crucially, speaker numbers can change during interim processing and need not be sequential. Store final results and abstain from attaching real-world names until an authorized human checks the speaker against the source.
Why separate microphone channels help
For multi-track interviews where every participant has a dedicated channel, IBM describes a channel-by-channel transcription alternative. This reduces the reliance on acoustic clustering and may handle simultaneous speech better, but it also creates more audio duration for billing and extra timestamp-merging work. Keep a channel map and timebase. Different devices may start recording at slightly different offsets, so synchronize with a common event before merging words chronologically.
Smart formatting is interpretation
IBM’s smart formatting converts dates, times, currency and similar entities into conventional text. For example, capitalization, punctuation and numeric normalization can improve readability while introducing a new ambiguity if a spoken phrase is interpreted as a date instead of ordinary words. Version 2 language coverage is not universal and varies by model family. Maintain both the unformatted transcript and display version when precision matters, and verify quoted amounts manually.
Operational API safeguards
Use the provider’s model listing endpoint to confirm which recognition model supports which option; do not assume a flag works on every language family. Save the model ID, locale, timestamp, selected options and request region with the job record. For regulated conversations, establish retention, data residency and access-control terms for the account deployment and the downstream annotation system separately.
Practical comparison to competitors
Rev and AssemblyAI also deliver speaker-aware transcripts, while a dedicated recorder channel may outperform any diarizer on overlapping voices. Choose using a holdout corpus representative of actual microphone conditions, not a generic published percentage. Evaluate word error rate, speaker attribution, punctuation correctness and the time an editor spends correcting errors. Only mark a speaker as verified when an authorized reviewer has evidence.
