LLM Benchmark Protocol Audit: Leakage, Harness and Reproducibility. This dated guide separates the actual model or API mechanism from promotional comparisons, endpoint aliases and features added by later releases. It focuses on implementable choices, documented limits and evidence a project should collect before deployment.

What was released and when

An LLM benchmark result is a measurement of one model configuration on one dataset under one scoring protocol. It is not a universal intelligence rating. Dataset contamination, leaked reference answers, prompt revisions, inference budgets, tool permissions and grading-model bias can make nominally comparable percentages represent different experiments.

Architecture, interface and the important distinction

A rigorous protocol describes the task population, licensing, inclusion/exclusion rules, held-out set creation, dataset version/hash, prompt and few-shot examples, generation settings, model snapshot, allowed retrieval/tools, maximum output budget, repetition count, grader rubric and uncertainty intervals. Vendor-reported numbers should be labeled vendor-reported even if the source is first party.

A useful real-world implementation

For an enterprise question-answering benchmark, use a fresh, consented internal corpus and pre-register what counts as correct, partial, ungrounded or abstained. Exclude duplicates across train and test, use blinded human grading for a stratified sample, and separately score output formatting. Record whether a model saw retrieved text or had access to external search.

Limitations, licensing and evidence quality

Automatic LLM judges may prefer certain writing styles or models. Even exact-match scoring can misclassify semantically correct numeric answers. Public leaderboards can be contaminated by training data and vendor tuning, and repeated public submissions create multiple-comparison effects. Do not publish a single “best model” headline without stating conditions.

Alternatives and the selection rule

Use benchmarks to reject clearly inadequate choices and refine an application-specific evaluation, not to avoid performing the latter. AI09 owns cross-vendor buying recommendations; this article defines the evidence quality required to make them.

Evaluation protocol worth running

A minimum audit package contains task IDs, model responses, timestamps, sampling seeds where supported, grader disagreements and signed scripts. Provide both error taxonomy and confidence intervals; no scores in this article are claimed to have been personally measured.

Deployment and provenance checklist

Deployment record to preserve: canonical editorial ID wai-ai02-independent-benchmark-protocol-audit, exact endpoint or checkpoint revision when verified, request date and region, model and tokenizer version, allowed tools, input modality, prompt template, output budget and actual measured usage. For current currency costs use the AI10 price snapshot matched by version, billing unit, region, tier and effective date. Unknown access entitlements must remain explicitly unknown.

Editorial evidence boundary

This is a 2026-10-25 editorial snapshot. A product or service may have changed after that date; the linked official pages can be edited without preserving every prior state. No independent model performance testing or live customer-account entitlement check was conducted for this article.

Sources & Further Reading

Source documentation establishes vendor-published facts, not independently measured model quality, tenant access, contractual rights or current prices. Use a dated pricing ledger and an account-specific entitlement check for deployment decisions.
