ISO/IEC 42001 for AI Governance: A Management System, Not a Magic Shield

An AI management system helps organizations assign responsibilities and improve oversight.

An AI management system helps organizations assign responsibilities and improve oversight. Its existence does not mean a deployed model has passed every fairness, security or accuracy test.

Know what is being standardized

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 sets requirements for an organizational Artificial Intelligence Management System. A management system can include policy, processes, risk assessment, controls, monitoring and improvement. The standard is not simply a model leaderboard or a compulsory worldwide AI law.

Set a defensible scope

Identify organizational units, activities, suppliers and AI services to which the system applies. Include risks created when AI is purchased rather than built. Governance should consider context, affected parties, responsibilities and intended uses rather than treating every chatbot, classifier and medical system as equivalent.

Turn policy into evidence

Document who approves releases, inventories of AI use, risk owners, evaluation findings, supplier assessments, training, incidents and corrective actions. Use NIST’s govern-map-measure-manage structure as a complementary voluntary framework. Evidence should show practice, not just a written commitment.

Read certification language narrowly

Ask for an authentic certificate, accredited or otherwise qualified certifier, effective dates, covered sites and exclusions. Do not infer from certification that an individual model complies with every jurisdiction’s law, cannot hallucinate, or can lawfully process every type of personal data.

Useful first implementation

A team inventories internal AI assistants, records privacy and security dependencies, assigns an owner to each high-impact use case and runs periodic reviews. It may later seek certification, but its immediate success depends on detectable risks and decisions supported by evidence, not a logo.
