Mastra is a TypeScript framework for building agents and workflows, but the safest use of a framework is not the one with the most autonomous calls. Mastra’s documented workflows allow developers to define typed steps and control how data moves among them. This is particularly relevant when a single probabilistic answer is only one part of a larger deterministic business process. Good workflow design keeps the model’s judgment local to the step where it is useful.
What the architecture changes
The official documentation distinguishes a tool-using agent from a workflow composed of declared steps. Workflow definitions can validate inputs and outputs and express explicit branching or suspension. A development Studio and trace views can help operators inspect runs, but a UI trace does not replace signed audit records of financial or legal decisions. The architecture should keep each step’s input contract small, record which version of the workflow ran and guard against stale outputs being reused after source documents change.
A concrete, controlled workflow
Imagine reviewing a newly submitted article. A document parser extracts title and links; an agent proposes a summary; ordinary code validates that every proposed URL belongs to the uploaded evidence bundle. A second stage checks duplication using canonical IDs. A publishing reviewer approves the exact article revision. The workflow stores HTML as a draft, never making the final publish API available to the model. If a citation fails, the workflow returns a structured review item instead of generating filler to satisfy a word-count target.
Permissions and human oversight
Implement tools as application-owned functions with server-validated arguments and per-user authorization. Restrict access to the filesystem and network; even a typed schema should not allow arbitrary file paths. Suspend on approval, cancel on deadline and re-evaluate the payload revision when resuming. Keep secrets out of agent instructions and ensure external text is not allowed to choose new destinations or disable checks. Redact tool return bodies before sending traces to services outside the trust boundary.
Failure modes and limits
Typed steps can fail because their inputs are semantically wrong even if all fields exist. A correct-looking summary may cite a title that did not come from its URL. Workflows can also hang on unfinished approvals, branch incorrectly on an ambiguous classification or replay a write after recovery. Model or SDK router syntax in live documentation can change; this article intentionally avoids copying version-specific code signatures that may age quickly. Hosted plan or regional claims are not supplied.
When to choose it or an alternative
Use a Mastra agent for scoped search-and-draft actions and a workflow for reviewable stage transitions. Prefer a simple function when no model reasoning is needed; reach for a full orchestration platform when durable queues and operational SLAs exceed what the application deploys itself. Alternatives include VoltAgent, Pydantic Graph and Prefect, each with different language and workflow priorities. Compare the integration burden in the team’s existing deployment environment.
How to evaluate before deploying
Create a regression corpus of missing citations, unauthorized URLs, contradictory references, poisoned document instructions and approval tampering. Assert that drafts cannot be published directly and that duplicate deliveries produce one artifact. Run the test after every graph/schema change and before a new model is selected. Track both ‘correct output’ and ‘safe side effect’ as independent metrics; success at one does not establish the other.
Version, pricing and regional availability
Editorial scope: product documentation and documented conceptual behavior checked on 25 October 2026. Exact deployed package version, contract tier, price, quota and applicable geographic region have not been established for this record; they remain unknown rather than assumed. Where a dated release or announcement is discussed, it does not by itself prove that an individual account or region had access. Recheck moving documentation and source applicability before publication.
