Release context

Midjourney dates its Version 4 release to November 2022 and describes a new model architecture and improved knowledge of places, objects and complex scenes. It became the default on December 20, 2022. That distinction between availability and default selection is crucial when dating images from late 2022. Version 4 should be treated as its own historical model rather than a mode of V5, V6 or a contemporary editing service.

How the image workflow actually works

The archived guide documents three style flavors, 4a, 4b and 4c, with differing aspect-ratio compatibility. Style 4c became the default; the earlier variants had narrower supported shapes. Image prompts and multiple prompts were supported, but an image prompt remains visual conditioning rather than the full subject-lock controls of later versions. Initial square grids were smaller than common modern exports, and upscalers could change surface detail.

A practical production example

A museum exhibition flyer requiring an imagined 2022 generative-art style could use V4 examples to illustrate a transition in object coherence. Build a test card with a foreground object, a clearly separate background and a second character. Archive the exact 4a, 4b or 4c setting rather than claiming a single fixed V4 rendering. If the flyer needs a date, sponsor mark or readable map scale, add those in a conventional layout application after visual generation.

A concrete quality-control test

For an archival design comparison, generate or collect only assets where the author can identify the V4 flavor. A simple three-row review sheet should distinguish composition, prompt response and factual or anatomical mistakes. Never judge an old 512-pixel grid against a modern upscaled image without revealing the processing difference. Where period-specific controls cannot be called again, report the original historical documentation and classify direct replication as unavailable. The exercise establishes what was documented and observable in a specific artifact, not that every subscriber in every country had matching options.

Limitations and rights checks

Older Midjourney parameters and legacy upscale options may be retired, limited or renamed. The legacy reference should not be interpreted as evidence that a particular historical service tier remains purchasable in October 2026. V4 did not promise correct counts of limbs, exact logos, verified architecture or geographic authenticity. The original visual output cannot establish ownership of referenced photography, and a recognizable person still requires permission.

When to choose this approach

Use the legacy model to explain the historical improvement in scene planning and style choices. For a current campaign with strict typography, persistent brand assets or versioned client approvals, select a separately documented current model and preserve editable layers.

Implementation and acceptance checklist

  1. Set the release month and distinct default date in metadata.
  2. Capture the flavor flag and target aspect ratio for reproducibility.
  3. Separate image prompts from identity guarantees in briefs.
  4. Proof all physical relationships at 100% export scale.
  5. Verify terms independently before reuse or commercial redistribution.

Access, costs and dated applicability

Dates and capabilities refer to the documented release or method identified above, not to every later version. This archive does not assert current region-specific access, account-tier inclusion, credit usage, exact API pricing or a definitive commercial-use permission. Those fields remain unresolved until authoritative, cutoff-matched plan and rights material is attached by AI 10 and editorial/legal review. No images were generated or tested for this article.
