Release context

Adobe’s April 23, 2024 announcement introduced Reference Image control for the new generation of Photoshop Generative Fill and Generative Expand workflows. It lets a user provide visual guidance instead of trying to describe every material and shape through text. The feature belongs to a dated Photoshop release period and should not be conflated with a generic Firefly text-to-image page or the Lightroom Generative Remove tool. Its purpose is guided compositing, not guaranteed exact duplication of an input photograph.

How the image workflow actually works

Reference images are strongest when they communicate a clear design intention: the shape of a lamp, the textile feel of a cushion or the texture of a material. The user still needs to specify the area to change and evaluate how the generated region joins the original scene. An image reference may inadvertently transfer composition, color, brand symbols or attributes that the rights holder did not permit. Generative Fill can invent missing geometry even when a supplied reference looks precise.

A practical production example

A home-furnishing catalog needs to replace a generic vase in a styled room with an approved sample design. Isolate the intended tabletop region, provide a company-owned photograph of the vase as reference and describe the lighting in the source shot. Inspect the replacement against the actual vase specification, including handle count, logo orientation and shadow direction. If the asset cannot preserve verified product features, retain the original photo or composite manually.

A concrete quality-control test

Review a guided composite in three layers of meaning. The first is source preservation: did an approved original object remain unchanged where required? The second is reference interpretation: were the permitted shapes, textures or colors transferred without importing unrelated marks? The third is scene integration: do perspective, reflections and shadow direction fit the surrounding image? If one layer fails, an aesthetically appealing result is not a valid final. Retain masks and editable layers so clients can inspect exactly what was fabricated and what was photographed.

Limitations and rights checks

Adobe’s training-data description in its press and product material is not a warranty covering every reference upload or edited subject. Feature availability at the date of announcement may differ from current desktop subscriptions and credits. A generated result should not be marked “product photography” without verification of the pictured item. The source page is not an independent benchmark of reference faithfulness or an assurance of copyright ownership.

When to choose this approach

Use visual references to speed up concept iteration under an approved asset library. For exact client goods, combine editable layers, human product checking and original photography.

Implementation and acceptance checklist

  1. Secure rights for both the base image and reference photograph.
  2. Constrain the allowed generative area.
  3. Keep a written list of product details that must not change.
  4. Compare the result with source and reference at full resolution.
  5. Store original image, masks and derivative edits for review.

Access, costs and dated applicability

Dates and capabilities refer to the documented release or method identified above, not to every later version. This archive does not assert current region-specific access, account-tier inclusion, credit usage, exact API pricing or a definitive commercial-use permission. Those fields remain unresolved until authoritative, cutoff-matched plan and rights material is attached by AI 10 and editorial/legal review. No images were generated or tested for this article.
