“Reference support” is often an overly broad marketing label. A style reference, a scene-composition reference and a recurring-character reference solve different problems, and none guarantees pixel-level identity.
Classify the reference before generating
A style image suggests color, surface treatment and mood; a content reference suggests spatial arrangement; a character or object reference suggests recurring visual features. Leonardo documents these as separate guidance types. Ideogram 3.0 emphasized style references; Midjourney V7 introduced Omni Reference for characters and objects; Midjourney V8 used the newer Edit Model. These are different technologies with version-dependent limitations.
Build a consistency charter
For a fictional courier character, define five invariants—hair shape, jacket silhouette, distinctive badge, approximate age and color palette—and three permissible variables—camera angle, background and posture. Include a clear source image when you have rights. Render several independent scenes and check invariants without showing reviewers which generated image came from which provider. An attractive image can still fail the continuity test.
Know where AI is the wrong tool
Official Leonardo documentation warns that Character Reference is not a face-swap tool and does not promise perfect likeness. For a legally approved product label, an official sports crest or an identifiable employee photograph, direct image compositing often preserves necessary details better. Do not invent consent because a model technically accepts a portrait. Distinguish fictional characters from real persons and retain permission records.
Quantify failure rather than hype
Use a rubric with yes/no checks for subject identity, outfit, perspective, text accuracy, unsafe alteration and unrequested objects. Require multiple independent reviewers and calculate disagreement rates. If the team has no test images or annotations, label product support as documented, not experimentally verified. Add specific evidence links and a true not_tested flag to any feature matrix.
Worked scenario and failure test
A brand needs five drawings of a fictional messenger with an orange jacket and square satchel. Before prompting, decide whether the required continuity is the overall art style, the messenger’s body and face, or the spatial arrangement of a scene. Assign separate review criteria. If one generated messenger has a triangular satchel, reject it regardless of overall attractiveness. The team should never substitute a private employee portrait as a convenient character reference without consent. Direct compositing is preferable when the exact official badge or product logo must remain unchanged.
Decision guide and practical handoff
Define identity invariants before selecting a reference mechanism. A responsible review packet names the exact source or model version, the permitted input assets, the requested operation and the image characteristics a reviewer must check. It should also contain an unaltered reference, the accepted derivative, and a short record of what changed. A supported feature is not necessarily a reliable one for every brief, and the team must approve both technical appearance and real-world truthfulness before distribution.
Availability, price and geographic limitations
Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Release dates and historical tier details above are explicitly dated. Unless independently confirmed for a named country and account tier, current availability, billing currency, credit consumption, API quota and commercial entitlement are unknown—not universal. Consult official regional terms and AI 10’s dated price snapshots before procurement; do not treat a historical announcement as a live entitlement. No application, model, API response or image output was hands-on tested for this article.
