Semgrep Assistant is designed to interpret findings from security analysis, explain their context and help developers decide what to do. That differs from asking a generic language model to scan an entire repository without rules or traceability. First-party announcements in 2023 and 2024 explicitly describe auto-triage, code suggestions and component tagging.
Capabilities and integration boundaries
Semgrep describes an Assistant layer that uses scan findings and contextual data to recommend whether an issue is worth attention, how to remediate it and what component it affects. Its older announcements show how the interface evolved from selected-finding analysis toward PR guidance. These are vendor product descriptions and reported observations, not independent performance measurements.
A reproducible developer workflow
Begin with a confirmed Semgrep finding and a duplicate known false positive. Ask the Assistant to explain each separately, then inspect what evidence supports the classification. When it proposes a code fix, map the change to the failing security invariant. Add a regression test that fails before the patch and passes afterward; retain the underlying Semgrep rule and finding ID.
Limitations and failure cases
A low-level static rule can produce a false positive, and an AI explanation can also be wrong. A convincing justification does not prove exploitability; a generated patch does not prove that all similar flows are protected. Vendor-reported agreement rates are contextual claims and should not be displayed as independent accuracy scores. Findings in private code may expose sensitive control flow to the selected processing backend.
Data handling, approvals and security
Triage roles and permissions should remain explicit. Log who accepts a false-positive disposition and require a separate reviewer for critical auth, injection and secrets findings. Preserve rule metadata and build a rollback path. Different product generations, availability and plans should be documented individually rather than reusing 2024 marketing material as a 2026 tier promise.
Who should adopt it
Choose Semgrep Assistant when security teams already use Semgrep findings and need human-in-the-loop classification or contextual remediation. It is a security-review aid, not proof of exploit testing or code correctness.
Alternatives and decision trade-offs
Compare Snyk Agent Fix for Snyk Code findings and Sonar AI CodeFix for SonarQube rules. Keep per-finding success criteria rather than subjective review scores.
Version, region and entitlement caveats
Research and first-party documentation checked on 25 October 2026 (cutoff date). Documented version or status scope: not version-pinned. The documentation does not independently establish availability in every country, an exact installed client release, a universal enterprise contract, or a perpetual price. No unverified seat price, request quota, API rate, model entitlement or commercial-license guarantee is supplied here. Check AI 10 dated pricing snapshots and the signed agreement before procurement. The examples are suggested evaluation methods, not experiments or benchmarks performed for this article.
Checklist before production rollout
- Record the exact installed version, service account, organization policy and contract or plan applicable to the tested environment.
- Create a clean worktree; specify the task boundary, forbidden paths, acceptance criteria and rollback before tool execution.
- Audit file, shell, network, extension and repository-app permissions; deny all unnecessary credentials and privileged actions.
- Review each resulting diff for unrequested packages, automation changes, data leaks and behavioral regressions.
- Run targeted tests, existing integration/regression tests and independent code/security review in a trusted environment.
