An advertised generation price is paid for attempts, while a production team is judged on the seconds actually approved for use.
Evidence scope: First-party documentation was checked on 25 October 2026. Published pricing is a scoped list reference, not a guaranteed account quote. Source dates, release dates and the first effective date of a price are not assumed to be interchangeable; geography, plan, currency and invoicing may alter the paid amount.
Generated output differs from accepted footage
A video source can price five-second attempts in credits, per-second output in cash, or GPU processing in minutes. Luma’s Ray2 Flash and standard modes carry different credit costs for equal-length clips; Midjourney gives batch-dependent GPU minutes; xAI prices selected Imagine output seconds. These observations support a unit-safe formula, not an inference that their output quality is equal. The acceptance ratio must be measured on the intended creative and review standard.
The central yield equation
Define acceptance_yield = approved_output_seconds / total_generated_output_seconds. Define total_pipeline_cost as sum of each documented rendering charge, paid storage, soundtrack, upscale and recorded human review time. Then cost_per_accepted_second = total_pipeline_cost / approved_output_seconds, provided the denominator is positive. If zero footage is accepted, return undefined and mark the batch for review rather than dividing by zero. Keep the same currency and billing period in numerator components.
A controlled illustrative example
Suppose 40 hypothetical Luma Ray2 Flash 720p five-second generations cost 55 credits each, for 2,200 credits. If only eight clips are accepted, accepted footage is 40 seconds, giving 55 generation credits per accepted second. If instead 20 clips are approved, the measure is 22 credits per accepted second. Those numbers are credit consumption, not USD. Converting them to money requires a dated applicable plan/top-up cost and careful treatment of unused balances.
Resolution and clip stitching add layers
A draft might be rendered in a cheaper low-resolution mode, selected, then rerendered or upscaled for export; that upscale can introduce additional charges. Editing and interpolation may transform several five-second source clips into different total running time. A model that only records the final edited seconds but ignores source-generation waste is too optimistic. Track render SKU, generated length, accepted length, number of revisions, video input charges and human approvals in separate fields.
What the public rates cannot establish
Vendor listings do not provide a reproducible independent acceptance rate for your scripts, taste, deadlines or safety standards. Claims such as “four clips per final scene” must be explicitly attributed to the user’s own logs or labeled assumption. Use low, base and high yield scenarios until production data exists. Keep identity, licensing and likeness review costs visible without pretending to have run an unseen product test. The editorial video team owns qualitative comparisons.
How to verify the actual invoice
Begin with a small representative workload rather than the cheapest published headline. Record the exact provider and billing channel, API model identifier, currency, account geography, plan and commitment length. The price or quota evidence in this guide is keyed to underlying measured vendor events. Do not combine proprietary creative credits, token meters or media seconds into a single currency or invent a conversion rate between them. If an enterprise or regional rate is not published, leave its price unknown and obtain a written quote.
Keep separate estimates for failed attempts, optional tools, storage, exports, human quality review and tax. Use source-verified line items from the companion CSV instead of typing permanent numbers into your forecasting formulas. Where an old plan or model was superseded, preserve its original historical record and create an additive later snapshot. This guide does not claim a product test, performance ranking, independent legal assessment or live procurement approval.
Availability, alternatives and editorial limits
Available plans, supported endpoints, trial eligibility, quota reset and contract rights may vary by region and account even when a public website displays a single global currency. Compare an alternative only with the same accepted task, input/output volume, model version and privacy requirements. Vendor-provided marketing claims are not independent evidence of quality. This historical pricing article may be cross-referenced by the model, media or enterprise procurement team, but its purpose is to explain the billing mechanics without duplicating their evaluations or inventing test scores.
Pricing evidence boundary
This cost discussion concerns Cross-provider method. Reproduce a quote only with its exact model or plan identifier, chargeable unit, billing region, processing mode and timestamp; a changing vendor rate card is not a permanent price guarantee. If any one of these dimensions is missing, keep the associated rate and worked scenario under editorial review instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
