Veo 3.1 Preview Shutdown: Migrating Gemini API Video Jobs Without Assuming GA Parity

The relevant question is not whether Veo once supported 4K or native audio; it is whether a particular Gemini API endpoint still accepts a production request.

The breaking change happened before this editorial cutoff

Google’s current video documentation states that `veo-3.1-generate-preview`, `veo-3.1-fast-generate-preview`, and `veo-3.1-lite-generate-preview` were shut down on October 22, 2026. An example copied from an older guide can be technically accurate for its publication date yet fail today. Treat the old endpoints as migration sources, not live integration instructions.

Keep product and deployment surfaces separate

Google distinguishes the Gemini API Preview shutdown from GA models available through the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. That does not demonstrate that an old project ID, API key, endpoint path or rate entitlement follows the customer to Enterprise automatically. The announced alternatives include Gemini Omni Flash (`gemini-omni-1.1-flash`), which uses a different interaction pattern for generation and conversational editing. Choose the destination by required features and procurement surface, then confirm its region, enterprise account and data policies with Google.

Build a version inventory before touching code

Search deployment configuration for all three preview identifiers. Capture the old request body, task identifiers, frame references, duration and resolution. Also preserve metadata needed to reproduce editorial decisions: project slug, prompt version, human approvals, original source assets and completed video hashes. For each feature used, build a crosswalk marked supported, different or unknown on Omni; first/last-frame control and upload editing are not universal across regions. A successful response is not proof that audio timing or likeness restrictions match the legacy output.

A safe migration rehearsal

Pick one authorized, non-sensitive example from each input class: plain text, starting frame, start/end frames, existing generated video and uploaded clip. Run the replacement integration in isolation without changing the production service. Compare media schema, aspect ratio, duration, encoded resolution, downstream transcode success and metadata storage. Only after a human reviews footage should the team redirect traffic. Error handling must recognize unsupported regional editing and quota denials rather than retrying endlessly with the same invalid parameters.

Costs and operational risk

Preview price tables should not be joined directly to successor GA rates. Model class, second of output, quality, account and residency all influence billing; those belong in dated AI10 records. During migration, control daily job count, fail closed on unrecognized model responses, and preserve at least one known-good render for a visual regression check. If enterprise provisioning is not yet approved, mark that as an operational dependency, not a confirmed service availability claim.

Editorial example: a documentary clip library

A production company has 160 short clips generated with Preview identifiers in its metadata. Those files need not be regenerated simply because the endpoint closed. Preserve existing MP4s and their edit rights records; update only the regeneration pipeline. Queue a representative selection of 16 test shots, compare subtitles and synchronized dialog, and budget the observed success rate later rather than claiming it in this article. Escalate shots that depend on a removed API behavior to manual editing.

Historical truth and current truth

The October 15, 2025 Veo launch material documents capabilities at launch and remains useful historical evidence; the October 2026 shutdown notice controls live Gemini API guidance. Neither establishes service continuity on another partner’s website. Keep vendor-provided feature claims distinct from independent testing and verify the new contract before declaring the migration ready.
