A Windsurf tutorial from early 2025 and a Devin Desktop tutorial published after June 2026 do not describe the same product surface. Cognition announced its Windsurf acquisition on July 14, 2025, then introduced Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026 as the next generation of Windsurf. The Cascade assistant persists, but is embedded in an IDE that increasingly emphasizes managing multiple agents rather than only editing code.
What the official product can and cannot do
The current Cascade documentation separates Chat mode, which answers questions and may propose snippets, from Code mode, which can edit project files. It describes repository-aware analysis, terminal use, checkpoints, selected-text context and tools such as web search or MCP. The Devin Desktop announcement also describes its Agent Command Center and Agent Client Protocol integration. These interfaces should not be collapsed into the claim that Cascade autonomously deploys safe software.
A practical evaluation workflow
For a migration pilot, export workspace rules and save a clean Git commit before accepting the desktop update. Open one bounded repository and first ask Cascade to map a symbol without editing anything. Then request a deliberately small fix in Code mode; inspect the file list, shell requests and diff. Repeat the task with a separate agent only after confirming which tool owns the workspace, working tree and remote credentials.
Limitations and historical pitfalls
Old screenshots can point to Windsurf-branded menu items or settings that have moved. Some documented Cascade memories apply to the legacy assistant, not the newer Devin Local agent. User-defined rules, skills and agent-specific context should be checked individually; blindly assuming every historical preference migrates can change output. A checkpoint is not an off-machine backup and cannot undo downstream deployments or external API side effects.
Data handling and permission boundary
Assess the IDE process, agent runtime, terminal and MCP connectors as separate permission domains. A trusted repo may contain malicious instructions in documentation or package scripts. Keep developer secrets outside the working tree; require approval for installing dependencies, changing workflows, opening unfamiliar network destinations and publishing branches. Workspace rules are guidance, not an enforcement mechanism replacing operating-system permissions.
Who should use this approach
Developers who relied on Windsurf-specific completion should trial the current editor before committing a team migration. Teams already managing parallel agents may value the command-center orientation. For users who require a stable classic extension, also consider editor-native assistance and compare support status, not simply historical feature names.
Alternatives and trade-offs
Cursor emphasizes its own IDE and cloud agents; VS Code with Copilot preserves a mainstream editor; Continue can attach an assistant to existing editors. Their permission boundaries and data policies require separate verification.
Version, tier, region and evidence status
This article is an editorial snapshot checked against first-party material on 2026-10-25. Version or historical applicability: Windsurf acquisition 2025-07-14; Devin Desktop announced 2026-06-02. The exact software build in a reader’s organization, eligibility by country, enterprise agreement, separate provider model rates, code retention and full regional list have not been validated; such fields remain unknown rather than being guessed. Product statements are attributed to first-party descriptions, not independent hands-on tests. License guarantees, prices and seat limits require AI 10 dated snapshots or signed terms. Unverified details do not become timeless facts because they appear in current online documentation.
Deployment acceptance checklist
- Write the intended job and acceptance criteria; record the installed client release, plugin publisher, connected model/provider and tenant.
- Use a consented test repository with zero real secrets; capture installation permissions, processor regions, Git App grants and available audit logs.
- Verify the task boundary with a test that should fail when unauthorized: blocked file, network host or protected branch.
- Review proposed changes or comments against known requirements; run regression, security and integration checks independently of the agent.
- Document the owner, offboarding procedure, rollback limits and whether a formal procurement/privacy sign-off is still pending.
Live documentation is not a version-pinned guarantee
Cognition documents the June 2026 Windsurf-to-Devin Desktop transition. Devin’s living Cascade documentation describes Cascade and Devin Local as separate agents, but does not establish which agents remain available in every installed desktop release. Archive this distinction with the installed build and changelog; avoid asserting universal present-day availability for legacy workflows.
