Claude 3 Opus was the higher-capability member of Anthropic’s March 2024 Claude 3 launch. It targeted complex analysis rather than only low-latency chat. Anthropic’s later API retirement records show that the `claude-3-opus-20240229` snapshot was retired on January 5, 2026, before this publication’s October 2026 cutoff.

Historical research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Primary-source historical claims are date-scoped; cloud entitlements, region-specific availability, current pricing and rate limits are not implied.

The release and why it mattered

At launch the family was framed as an Opus/Sonnet/Haiku choice, with differing quality, speed and cost trade-offs. Anthropic published exam and reasoning benchmark comparisons, but the headline superiority claims should be interpreted as provider tests and not copied into a ranking of today’s models. Availability to cloud partners was not identical to direct Anthropic access.

Capabilities and genuine use cases

Opus was a relevant trial for detailed policy synthesis, multi-step reasoning and written analysis of mixed text and visual material. For every such trial, quality depends on input selection and the availability of ground-truth facts. Any result that cites contracts, laws or scientific measurements needs its claims compared to the primary documents.

Integration and version identity

Preserve its original dated identifier during investigations of an old workflow and do not relabel it as “Opus 4.” Compare a current replacement on a locked corpus and record output differences rather than treating a model retirement as transparent. Cloud operator differences may change effective sunset dates and call formats.

Limits and evidence gaps

An AI assistant’s confident prose is not a substitute for calibration or source traceability. Retired model documentation might remain accessible online after API service ends, so a web page’s presence does not prove live access. Unknown regional permissions and old pricing are deliberately excluded from this article.

How to choose or migrate

Claude 3 Opus is most useful as a historical benchmark for the flagship model tier and for teaching model-deprecation planning. Modern procurement should use version-pinned tests, separate security review and provider-specific current service terms.

Reproducible evaluation checklist

For older Claude services, compare the vendor-operated API lifecycle with the lifecycle published by the actual cloud partner. Exercise long inputs, structured outputs and tool argument validation as separate acceptance tests. Do not assume that matching family names imply identical backend checkpoints.

Collect the exact Messages API version, system instructions and model string from a reproducible request. An active cloud model and a retired direct-API model can coexist under similar product naming.

Sources & Further Reading

Source documentation establishes vendor-published facts, not independently measured model quality, tenant access, contractual rights or current prices. Use a dated pricing ledger and an account-specific entitlement check for deployment decisions.
