GPT-4o (“omni”) launched on May 13, 2024 with research demonstrations involving text, images and audio. It signaled a shift toward more natural multimodal interaction, but its first developer and ChatGPT rollouts did not enable every demonstrated input/output mode at once. The distinction between research-system capability and released endpoint support is essential for a trustworthy history.

The release and why it mattered
OpenAI described a model able in principle to take combinations of text, audio, image and video, with text, audio and image outputs. Its public launch also promised staged access to improved voice experiences in the following weeks. In the API, developers initially encountered text and vision capabilities first; realtime audio products and their own model identifiers developed through later announcements.
Capabilities and genuine use cases
For document analysis or image-based Q&A, GPT-4o reduced the perceived gap between a chatbot and a visual assistant. Nevertheless, an image question can fail on legibility, embedded numbers and misleading visual context. A retrieval process that logs which image region or source paragraph mattered is more trustworthy than a fluent but unsupported explanation.
Integration and version identity
API buyers should record whether the workflow used Chat Completions, Realtime, text-audio preview, or a particular dated GPT-4o snapshot. They are not automatically compatible. Include the image preprocessing path, token accounting basis, voice permissions if any, and a human-reviewed fallback for uncertain text or visual extraction.
Limits and evidence gaps
The 2024 product announcement describes consumer plan rollout windows, not permanent 2026 plan quotas. Tool availability and media support are endpoint- and model-specific. OpenAI’s self-reported comparative speed and quality should be evaluated in a controlled task before it becomes a procurement claim.
How to choose or migrate
Choose this article for understanding how the omni family entered the market. For an actual production decision, select a documented current model/endpoint pair and verify media modalities separately; AI 03–05 own detailed generated image, video and speech production guides.
Reproducible evaluation checklist
Build three distinct test sets: the regular path, an adversarially ambiguous path, and a regression set drawn from failures. Hold prompts and tool access constant while comparing snapshots. Never use a consumer product announcement to fill an API region or account-entitlement field.
If the historical route is retired, keep the example as an archived request only. For active migration, identify a current model from the provider catalogue and perform a staging replay before changing production configuration.
