What the product actually does

Adobe’s June 2026 instructions describe asking questions within a PDF, following generated citations back to relevant sections, and copying generated summaries. Its PDF Spaces documentation describes questions across selected files, links and text. These modes should not be mixed with generic web search: answers may reflect a bounded collection whose omissions matter.

Adobe explicitly warns in its generative-AI disclosures that the assistant can sometimes produce inaccurate answers or misleading attributions; it may fail to find information even when present. This first-party caveat is central to responsible editorial explanation and rules out marketing language such as ‘verified by AI’ without human review.

A practical first workflow

For a contract, ask for a table of renewal date, termination notice period, governing law and obligations, each with the supporting document location. Open each cited passage and read at least one paragraph before and after it. If the answer includes a figure, cross-check the original table and its units.

PDFs often hold personnel, customer or commercial secrets. Before enabling document processing, ask what documents may be sent to Adobe’s AI services under the contract and whether the workspace is authorized to use those services.

Consult administrator controls, regional data processing options and relevant service-specific disclosures. A citation linking to a file only establishes traceability within the user’s collection; it does not establish that the file’s copyright permissions allow reuse.

Export, ownership and future portability

Use Acrobat’s copy/export tools to preserve verified extracts in ordinary documents with filename and page location. Keep the source PDFs under existing retention policy, rather than treating chat responses as source documents.

The strongest portability safeguard is a source register and an annotated evidence table. A private PDF Space configuration may not transfer intact to another provider.

Choose a small and non-sensitive real task with an answer that can be independently checked. Before testing, record the account, region, language, plan, device and observed user-interface version. Check whether the service meets the entire job: discover, draft, fact-check, permission, revise, export and delete. Separate vendor-described features from any independent outcome evidence.
